I am working on a map and trying to create a forest to place trees, but it crashes after I click "Yes" when it asks me if it should create a new forest. What is going wrong?

Known issue, been reported by others already.
It's a bug in 0.7.0.2. No workaround AFAIK.

Actually, maybe try stealing a .forest file from another level, and add it manually in the .mis file.
Then edit the forest in the editor.

An easy work around. When your cleaning up the map for your creation. delete all the trees and rocks with the forest eraser. DONT delete the FILES under the file tree (right side) use the eraser and leave a few rocks and trees. Make a new terrain block, and first thing you have to do is paint a few trees or rocks on the ground. Save. Restart game, Forest editor should work still. Just make sure you dont leave any floaties.
