The fuel gauge in this game serves no purpose other than telling you how long you can drive till you have to respawn, right now. Just like in the gravity fuel scenario, You Should have the ability to refuel your cars on vanilla maps. Take these as an example:

These user interfaces were only used in the gravity fuel scenario, The refuel features from that scenario could be used in free roam and the upcoming career mode. This would make use of the tip saying 'watch your fuel' on the loading screen. This will be very important for career mode when you're low on fuel, Lets make use of that fuel gauge!

it would prbably take some time to implement this into all cars and gas stations. If you want it so bad, best you can do is to press Ctrl R and respawn in a gas station

But Just... Respawning to refuel isn't realistic!

Gravity fuel's code could be implemented into the gas station structures in vanilla BeamNG.drive maps.

plus, respawning basically resets everything about the car.. brake temps, fallen off doors, etc, when you just want to refuel the damn thing.. especially when you've put quite a few kilometers on the trip-meter, resetting the car ususally messes that up

If you want a feature, and you are aware of a mod that adds it, why not just use the mod?

because what if you wanna play vanilla? just because there are mods doesn't mean they can't be implemented officially. Refueling is a critically needed feature in this game.
    It needs to be official.

Yes. The same thing happened with traffic and a few other small features iirc where it was originally deemed impossible, then made as a mod, then made official. I'm just saying that until (if) refueling gets added as official content, you should use the mod.

I think sometime the Devs make scenarios that features things like: racing, police chase, delivery, ect as a proof of concept for things they want to implement but not yet perfected. Chances are if they make something in a scenario (in this case, refueling), they want to implement it into freeroam or the awaited career mode.
It's very likely that the devs is already working on something like this.

Oh! If the scenarios indicate upcoming features, I'm ready for the wait! I'm putting no pressure on the developers, they can take as long as they need!

It takes forever to run out of fuel in this game, and if you do, just hit recover and it’ll refill it.

As SKB already said, respawning resets EVERYTHING on the vehicle, when you just want to refuel it.
