At first, i am not english, and i can't speak that language very well, but i will try to do the best as possible.

I saw every video of the project, and i am very exited of this wonderful physics engine, but i also saw that the roof of the car wont getting some damage, is it true or my eyes lie to me? I hope that someone from the team can give an answer.

    Sincerely 562239

    Hello,

The nodes and beams system can simulate the entire car's body, and all the parts of the vehicles will be destructible, So the roofs will also be concerned.

Dude, dont look at the pictures, look at the videos. the cars overturn themselves and the roof is still undamaged.

The roof of a car that barrels do not always collapses, you know ...
It depends on the location and strength of impacts, as in any type of crash.
Also, we see clearly roofs deform in those videos, I don't understand what is wrong with this.

No. Dude look at the scene from the thumbnail in the second video. When you roll a car, it completely depends with what part you hit the ground where it gets damaged. you can flip a car and only touch the ground with the front and back, depending on how it rolls. And in some screens the roofs do get damaged. Even when the roof does touch the ground, it completely depends on the speed how much the roof deforms.

So yes, your eyes are lying to you.

The roof is completely damageable. I don't know if you missed the video you where watching entirely but there are so many examples of cars being dropped on each-other, and in the first video the pickup was dumped onto it's roof 1 minute 15 seconds into the video completely flattening it. It depends on the impact the vehicle endured, and the strength of the roof.

If you look at the second to last crash in the second video, that is your best example for roof deformation... it is completely folded in half.

The cars are totally deformable (roof, doors, trunk, wheels, chassis; everything can deform) and we use "true" first person (the camera is simply placed inside the car, no special mesh is loaded like in a lot of games). So yes :)

The second video itself disproves your argument. 0:50, the Covet's roof is completely pancaked.

So, I am fully aware that yes this has been completely redone and has nothing to do with ror, but I am curious about one thing. How do you get the camera to stay generally within the car? If you have it tracked to multiple pieces like in ror then you get the annoying drifting camera! And If its tracked to a bad piece in the car then the camera gets blocked by something or doesn't face the correct direction.

    I'm Just curious.

It tracks to one node in the floor of the car. Unless the floor falls off (which it can't) the camera will never try to follow any detached parts.

    Awesome,
But what if you managed to land on a rock/something hard right at that point on the floor? Would the floor (at that point) Bend upward there-for raising the camera?

Thats an interesting question, i hope the devs will test it out... Also, what about the interior camera, is it mounted to the floor to? Adding to that, will there be a dramatic/action camera? Thanks.

I like the idea of a dramatic/action camera, like next to the wheel or something! I always liked that camera angle in gta. Their camera had an action setting that scrolls through several cameras but wont stay on the wheel cam.

I believe all cams will be mounted to the floor. I'm not sure though, maybe some exceptions like a drive by cam! (loved that in ror, except when a hill would get in the way...)

At that point it doesn't really matter where the camera is :)

While I agree, that the complete car is deformable at any part, I have to agree the OP that the roofs are often a bit too stiff/ strong. It needs a big hit to deform roofs in some situations, quite a bit more than it would need in reality. But what bothers me even more are the hood and the trunk lid. They are way too stiff and often can carry the complete car weight at a rollover preventing the car falling on it´s roof, but rather rolling over the opened trunk lid and hood. These pieces are just thin metal and should bend way easier IMO. At all they shouldn´t be able to carry the complete car.

I forgot to say congratulation to BeamNG to this wonderful piece of technology. It´s just such a big step forward compared to other damage models and physics in games we know.

This is a hideously old thread now.

I cannot duplicate a boot lid or bonnet taking the weight of the entire car, they bend perfectly fine here, as does the roof.

The funny thing I think is that the OP claimed there was no roof damage, yet in the screenshot for the second youtube video we have a D15 smashing a grand marshal, and sure enough the grand marshal roof is surprise surprise: bent
