Unusually low FPS on good PC

    My rig is:
    - AMD FX-8320 3.50ghz CPU
    - GTX970 GPU
    - Win10
    - 24gb DDR3 RAM

I'm getting 12-14 fps in game depending on vehicle and map, which screws with the countdown timers on scenario's, making some impossible for me to complete in time

I experienced this in sim racing days, when I couldn't keep up with people on higher FPS, even at the same speed in game. I got a new pc to fix it then, but I can't see my current rig being being underpowered again now?

As far as I can tell, the weakest link of my rig now would be the CPU, which isn't a "Bad" cpu, but the game isn't using all of it's power by any means anyway. To upgrade that though, would require a new motherboard with a different CPU pin count

The game is very cpu intensive so i think it may bottleneck a bit.If not tweak your settings for performance in nvidia control panel for your gpu

Load Gridmap (do not move the camera or the vehicle)
Go to options > gameplay > enable 'Advanced Mode'
In the sidemenu there should be a new button named 'PERFORMANCE'
Press it and let the graphs fill the screen.
Press ALT+O and paste the link for the image here.

Repeat but select the CONE from the vehicle selector.

Go to the BeamNG.Drive directory (Steam/Steamapps/Common/BeamNG.Drive/Bin64) and run the 'banana-bench.x64.bat' file.
When done, take a screenshot and post the link here.

CPU bottlenecking in that benchmark. Massively. More so than you should be even for that CPU actually.

Ensure that you don't have anything else using resources while you are benchmarking/playing. Open task manager to keep an eye on resource usage.

Please also check your CPU temperature.

The game seems to be somewhat unoptimized for AMD CPUs, I get similar issues. To make sure you're getting the most out of your CPU, I would make sure something like Chrome or Curse isn't eating up your resources, and wait for (I'm hoping) eventual optimizations or at least more options for better performance on AMD CPUs.

Think we've found the problem here.

I checked and it was pretty high, so I went into the case to clean the fan out, and it turns out the bottom heatsink bracket on my motherboard had shattered at some point...

Got everything held back in place to make sure things still work and I'm getting high 60s - mid 80s fps now

The game doesn't use 'brand specific' optimizations. We don't bias on a specific brand.
What you have there is actual CPU capabilities being what they are.

In fact, it's the other way around. Current AMD CPUs are not optimized for single threaded performance. Instead, AMD's solution last product cycle was to throw more cores at the existing CPU architecture, and this was years ago. I'd reference a meme on the topic that @Nadeox1 posted, if I could find it.
