We are very impressed by the realism of the car crashes and impacts! So much so that we feel that with the proper textures and lighting we could make a convincing car crash scene using footage of real streets with the CGI cars overlayed. If the scenes were filmed with just the empty streets how feasible is it that the technology is here to make a convincing crash that would not look cheesy on the big screen?
I run Avast Productions which is a Seattle based video production company. I am the DP and cinematographer for Avast. We make music videos, short films and commercials. We are working on a script for a short film that that has a car crash at the beginning of the movie. The movie is a thriller and it will be filmed in Seattle. We could have actually crashed a car but that's really expensive, dangerous and would take a LOT of planning. We thought it would be much cooler if we worked with someone who has skills in CGI and virtual physics to craft something cool! We didn't just want to make a car crash, we wanted it to be very artistic and show multiple angles and capture the emotion of the scene. - - - Updated - - - This is the video that I was most impressed by: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5jUfe5jKk8
I'm pretty sure with enough effort and time in you'll be able to pull off some great action scenes. The only limitation would be how much resources you'd put into the project. You can create your own maps and adjust lighting, etc if I'm correct. Pay the right people and I'm sure you'd have a great shot. Or if you're talented enough yourself!
