I created this thread as being relatively new, it can be hard to understand certain things about the forums. This is why we should all discuss what is wrong with bumping threads in our opinions and try to piece together the real, TRUE reason it is bad. Feel free to share your ideas just try not to start arguments (P.S. If you intend on bombarding this thread with hateful and abusive messages, don't bother until the earliest being tomorrow at 5pm CST, or when I'm online again. I do go to school and rarely have time to check the forums during the weekdays so if I do check I will scroll 3 notifications before giving up because it isn't worth my time)
Typically the argument against bumping threads is essentially the fact that, if people bump the thread for a dead mod, people who didn’t know about it could get excited about a dead mod. If that happens, they post without looking at older post dates about their excitedness for the release of or give out suggestions for a mod that is never going to see the light of day. This leads to a chain reaction of more users posting and keeping the thread active, which means more users will see it and so on.
You should just pay attention to what happens after a thread is bumped, it gets on top of the recent posts page and suddenly lots of kids arrive and start adding pointless messages and the next day the thread dies again, nothing constructive ever comes from this. It also gives false hope because your first assumption is that the dead mod got revived, which does sometimes happen for real. And it's also literally against the rules and there is a BIG RED BOX TELLING YOU TO NEVER DO IT but people do it anyway and I can never understand why.
it's also for general cleanliness, forums are intended for all messages to have some "meat" to them, unlike most social media platforms where it's the norm to post a two-word reply to something. when you've got an active thread, having 3 people posting "cool mod" doesn't matter too much, as notifications were being made anyway. but when that thread has been inactive for a while, posting "cool mod" is worse because suddenly this "new" thread has been dug up, adding to the list of post notifications. that being said, some people absolutely take bump-moderation too far, where a constructive post will get 2 copies of the condescending copypasta and 5 immature users swearing at them. As a general rule, only bother telling people not to bump if they: -bump a second thread, or -if their first bump is particularly non-constructive, i.e. "lol the devs copied this" on Dkutch's Covet MRi mod. I have nothing wrong with bumping threads, so long as the post is constructive. Even a "do you have any progress" or "will this get new vanilla features added" is fine IMO, so long as no one else has already asked.
Yeah the copypasta spam is way more annoying than bumping itself, you go to a thread and you see not only a bunch of kids but also 3 variants of the same soulless lazy copypasta "Hello and welcome to the forums! You just did a terrible thing! I will now explain why it was bad but the message is so long that you definitely won't read it! Bye!!!!!!!"
just a bit of a general pain in the ass seeing a thread from 3 years ago revived just for a kid to go "wow this looks great i cant wait" when the author hasnt been online in years is just annoying
playing the devils advocate here.....you cant really win either way. If you ban "bumps" you just encourage new posts for a topic that was already covered. If you ban "topic already exists" type posts, then you will just get bumps on old posts. there is no actual solution needed though, its just to encourage using common sense. If you want to comment on an older thread, with something of note - it should be permissible. Likewise, if someone creates a new thread on a topic that has already been extensively covered, discouraging posts like "see this thread" and "use the search tool" should be done too. Its a community, we can act like one - we all have a common interest after all
Think of thread bumping in the same context of an old bus stop that was removed near my house a few years back. When the city removed the bus stop from the route, they forgot to also remove the bus stop sign from the side of the road. Initially, everyone in the neighborhood knew the bus no longer stopped at this bus stop, but whenever a new family would move in (especially at the apartment building near the old bus stop) they would not know that the bus stop was inactive simply by looking at the bus stop sign. Because of this, they would wait at the bus stop for the bus to arrive, as the bus route remained and could be found online, however this particular stop had been moved to a street beside this one. They would wait there until it became evident the bus would not show, and promptly leave. Sometimes, others walking by would see them waiting, and assume the bus service had been resumed here, and would also begin to wait at the old bus stop. Of course, the bus never serviced this stop, so they all ended up wasting their time. In this story, replace the bus stop sign with a thread. For someone simply glancing at a thread, not checking how rusty and unkept the bus stop was (or how old the last post on the thread was) they might assume the bus was continuing to arrive here (ie: the thread had relevance or the project contained within it was seeing continued progress). People waiting at this bus stop would represent the people posting on these threads. Others see that there are people at this bus stop, and assume that this is either a new bus stop, or the bus service has returned here. Eager and excited, they not only tell their friends and family the bus stop had people, they also try to use this bus stop (This is representative of seeing the thread in the 'Recent Posts' or 'What's New?' sections of the forums). In the end, no amount of people waiting brings the bus service back, and all the people there waiting (or in this case posting) have wasted their own time. Hope this helps simplify it a little bit!
In my opinion, bumping is fine IF and ONLY IF what you add to the conversation is actually constructive and on topic. So for instance, there are a lot of feature request threads on the forums that most people don't touch because they are so old... but then if you make a new thread about wanting that feature, you get told to just go and use the search button for your answer. That I have seen it where that particular person had genuine thoughts to add to the topic, but didn't post it on the original thread due to its age and the bad stigma that bumping has around here... only to get berated to making a new thread about a topic that already has threads about it. This is why if I ever leave a link drop to an old thread I usually state that if you are to add to the topic then no one will mind the bump. I think I have done that with the "Guys come to talk about tires" thread at least a dozen times now. That being said... bumping old mods... especially dead ones that are VERY clearly dead by just reading a couple comments... that is a big no no... especially when you show up to ask "where link?"
i think people bump to eather get attention or try to revive a dead mod but idk i dont bump (sorry for bumping i had to do it)
