I noticed that in ROR, there were a few cars that had the crashing physics, and a lot of them that didn't. Is DRIVE gonna end up like that? Or is everybody trying to make them work well? (Sorry, I don't know what it's called, mesh?)

All cars in RoR had potential to deform properly. However, most people chose not to make complex n/b structures for realistic damage. They just put a mesh on a simpler, sturdier n/b. Making mods in RoR was actually quite difficult, so not many people dedicated enough time to learn how to make an effective n/b structure. Hopefully, since BeamNG is very different from RoR, more members will understand how to create an n/b and produce better mods.

we'll see i guess. I don't think someone would get any praise if they released a rigid body car

No, that is not necessary true. Ror can only simulate metal deformation, so if a vehicle is made out of a material other than metal, making it deform would not be realistic.

They shouldn't, because that completely defeats the purpose of a soft body simulator. That's one of the reasons I stopped playing RoR awhile ago, too many models simply could not deform. Thankfully quality of the models is much higher in BeamNG so far, so I think this will be a much more successful project.
