I think that all windows and windshields should crack, then break. I just think this will make beamng.drive more realistic :D

EDIT: just noticed that I spelled break wrong....

Shattering glass as well as dust and car debris/fluids would and will be someday, an epic event.
I do not forsee this becoming a reality for quite some time but it will happen.

I think he just wants to have the glass break like in most games, where it kinda just disappears.

no, I just mean that first the glass would crack, then after you hit it again then it would brake completely.

How can you know what will make BeamNG more realistic when you don't know what realistic is?

Windshields are made from a completely different type of glass than side and rear windows. Windshields are made of laminated annealed glass, which when hit, forms cracks in a localised area. Harder hits will cause the glass to fracture across the pane into relatively large shards so vision is not impaired, but will not shatter as the laminate holds it together.

Side and rear windows are made of unlaminated tempered glass, which is also very strong, but shatters into thousands of tiny fragments should any part begin to crack. This is because the tempering process intentionally leaves a lot of internal stress within the glass, converse to annealing, which relieves internal stress. This internal stress is what makes the pane explode into fragments.

Glass in BeamNG is quite realistic as it is.

windshield is great as it is, but side windows should have a breaking animation, like glass going everywhere

Haven't you heard of tempered glass? Which is on every car just about.

I dare you to find me a modern side or rear window with a crack in it.

As others have stated above, the glass in even remotely modern cars is tempered. If you crack it in any way it will completely shatter. The tips of the corners can sometimes be chipped, but that would hardly be noticeable or even realistic, as the impacts in beam are almost always significant enough to shatter a window if they affect it at all. I would like to see the windshields go through two or three "stages" of damage, or even fall out completely, depending on how much they have been deformed, but that is probably coming in the distant future anyway.

If you are trying to say that you want the Burnside to have plate glass that behaves that way I am afraid it is also too new to have that. They would need to make something from the 30's or older to have plate glass windows.

That is laminated glass just like a windshield, and it is shattered, not cracked.

You have phrased your question poorly. Are you wanting the shattered glass to remain in place until it is physically knocked out by the car's motion like this. (That glass would fall out as soon as that car began to move around very much)

In other words, any distortion to the glass would cause it to completely shatter as it does in the video, and then it would begin to fall apart/out as physics dictated (which would be almost immediately if the car was moving when it shattered)? If that is what you're wanting then yes, I would like that in the game, but it would be a small change that would probably be very difficult to add.

Since the IIHS tests their cars with the windows down I had to dig a bit to find a good video of side windows breaking in an accident. The crash happens at 0:45 and the rest of it has usefull slow-mo and aftermath coverage.

Notice how the NON LAMINATED windows that were damaged just disappear into dust during the crash? That's what it would look like in beam 99% of the time.
