Ok, so i want to set myself up for a exciting map project.. Hopefully a rather large one! I love to sit on my computer and work with creative things.. Only thing is, i need some ideas.. I want to make a realistic map with buildings that are at that place. So in other words, a simulator map from for an example a small town with small streets all around. I need suggestions for locations, but there is some criterias tho! - It has to be mapped by Google Maps/Google Streetview (Going to be used to get perfect references) - Have good sattelite cameras from the top to have even more good references to go out from! ^^ Im quite in love with small cozy towns such as Manitou Springs that acctually i have been on holiday to! ^^ A cozy small mountain village that lays at the foot of Pikes Peak! But hopefully i will get quick responding.. I just want to start working, so when i spot the suggestion i really want to make.. Im just going to throw myself around and start! (So no fancy deadline) ^^
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] Well not a small town, but how about the Vegas Strip and McCarren Airport? Now that would be cool to cruise down in my Beamng mobile. A fair amount of modeling, but even kept simple would be fun.
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] Vegas strip sounds cool, but then again.. Making just the strip would seem weird in my eyes! And the models will be in rather high quality! Not going to show off some half hearted modeling that a 3 year old could have made in Lego's!
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] Yeah, I am just learning modeling and to do it right, with the amount of time I have available and the learning curve would take me years. Vegas would make a good group project. Anyway, how about attaching a few pics of what you have done in the past, so I can admire your talent. So far I have only used sketchup so the quality is poor as even using Sketchup I am new. A couple interesting places that I have been to, that would be fun in game are the old section of Pureto Rico or the old section of Quebec City. Saint Croix is a small island and would be a good project as well. Harpers Ferry in WV would also be incredible.
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] I dont have so much on this computer, since its brand new. Maybe i can find some on a old hdd or something ^^ But i use sketchup myself. In fact, one can get rather good results in sketchup if you do it right! Textures are the worst thing i sketchup IMO, i use only custom textures i have gathered from around. Everything from using my camera to take pictures of the gravel outside to take pictures of planks xD
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] In the mod I just released, I made a bridge, a house and a Mayan Pyramid in Sketchup, being only a little better than a 3 year old using legos. Actually, I made some road sewer lids, and oil slicks as well that look ok. As far as textures I did use my phone to take a picture of some hay and added it directly into Torque world editor. I didnt get the size perfect but it looks pretty good, although I did not make it realistic as far as a pile of hay. I just made a small bump with the terrain editor and put the hay texture on it and it looks pretty good.
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] Nice! Improvisation is the trick of making good things IMO. Being a creative person, and come up with not always huge ideas.. But small detais that has a lot to say later on when it comes to quality and how it looks! ^^ Also with small details scattered around the map feels more like a simulator than driving on a flat grass with nothing around.. Just making a haystack and a small barn, maybe some fencing... Profit! Suddenly that flat grass grew into something related to farming and in a instant looked 10x better!
Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] You could do the town of grantsburg Wisconsin with a small lake on the south side of town, with lots of trees as you go further and the clay derby track on the north Edit: I mixed up my directions. The lake is north and the derby track is south

Re: I need a idea! [Map Project] The entirety of my state consists of small towns, save for two or three, maybe four cities here and there. If you want to do a REALLY big map set in a rather small town that's a well known vacation destination, feel free to model Lake Winnipesaukee and the towns that surround it. Yes, I know, it has a weird name. That's my state for you. Everything up here is named after either some place in Europe or a native American tribe that used to live in the area. It's just another part of living in New Hampshire.

[Map Project] I spent some time on Google Maps and I found some highways that surround what my state calls "the Presidential mountains" which are a series of mountains named after old presidents, like Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, and Mt. Washington. I looked at the on Google Earth and they were rather decent quality pictures. I also found a private property just off of one of the highways that had a little dirt track that couldn't have been more than a 1 or 2 minute walk away from the house. Just beware that, A, the size of the map would be humongous, and B, Mt. Washington is the tallest mountain in the northeast, so I'm not sure if there's an altitude limit, and if there is, the distance from the base to the peak might be too big.
