***UPDATE*** Map released on Repository: https://www.beamng.com/resources/somerset-uk.20323/ I have released my UK map, based in Somerset. I have tried to strike a good balance between realism and fun. It is about 5km/5km, with a mix of asphalt and dirt roads. The dirt roads are not massively realistic for the UK, but they are fun so... The asphalt are set up for driving on the left (the AI is a bit nuts at junctions though, so be careful!). I've also included 4 time trials that I haven't really tested... Happy to take suggestions, but also remember to be nice. This is my first map, if you don't like it, that's ok. ***UPDATE*** Map released on Repository: https://www.beamng.com/resources/somerset-uk.20323/ There are also likely to be some other issues (particularly damned floating trees!). I haven't finished it, but wanted to release it or it'll never happen. Hope you enjoy.
I clicked on the google drive link and it says 404. That’s an error. The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know.
- Ah damn it. Sorry. I've put the Reddit link in. No idea why that one didn't work as it's a direct copy from the Reddit page.
Seems like a good idea for a map, since there isn't really much UK maps in BeamNG, however pics would be appreciated. Other than that, good work!
Finally In all serious though, this map is very nice and is something ive been looking for for ages. Hopefully it gets updates now its being uploaded to the repository, but its very nice never the less. Lovely
Ha. I know right... Lazy damn modders... Since I uploaded it I've already fixed a couple of things (mainly lost textures on the signs). So I will need to re-upload, but I think once it is approved that is pretty easy.
I know that you said that you "decided to start from scratch with a higher definition terrain because I couldn't smooth the roads enough for my liking (I've tried to balance smooth and enjoyable with realistic British roads - i.e. slightly wonky and a bit bumpy)." But I'd rather have the roads be realistically bumpy and wonky than drive on a boring smooth road that feels like driving on glass. I already have enough of that dullness on the poorly done roads in american truck simulator.
I probably should have been more clear. I like some bumps, but with the lower res it was more like corners. I found I kept damaging the damned oilpan on fairly flat sections, or losing control where I shouldn't have. It's still pretty bumpy though, but hopefully a smoother-bumpy... Effectively I went from a resolution of 1 metre triangles, to 50cm triangles, which made a huge difference. I tried going further, but at 25cm ones it was too laggy on my computer to do the editing.
Thanks, I did look at putting some potholes in - but it isn't too easy. I could add some more road damage markings later but didn't have time yet. I initially tried narrower roads, but the AI struggled not to crash (and I did too...). I might make some of the side roads a bit narrower in the future, but for the main roads I think this is fairly accurate, at least compared with the roads I drive on round here anyway. The dirt roads are way too wide... but I prefer them like that...
Thank you very much mate. I waited a long time for a British map, and not only is it great, it is the first map where traffic is really left-handed, and despite how huge it is, its FPS-friendly. It is much better than the Scottish Roads. And by the way, is this a port from some game, or did you make it yourself from begginings?
Thanks. I appreciate the comments and glad you are enjoying it. I made it from scratch more-or-less. I used DEFRA Lidar data for the terrain shape, and a google map image for the terrain image, but otherwise the rest was just playing about trying to make it as good (at least for what I wanted) as possible. I'm currently trying to get it onto the repository, but running into a series of issues with my poor file management of the textures and materials... I have updated a few minor things, so once it is up I will post here, and people can switch over to that version for the fixes.
Fantastic, quick question, how do you get the DEFA Lidar data into BeamNG/Blender? Id love to have a crack at this myself
