Is it just me that’s tired of seeing all these new threads popping up just for it to be poorly made AI generated mods with countless errors? Shouldn’t we mandate mods to at least have a proper code and limit the use of AI so it doesn’t just create more mods with inconsistencies and tons of bugs? Wasn’t gonna make a thread out of this, but I’ve seen like 4-5 new “mods” go up over the last 2-3 weeks only for it to be AI coding that has multiple obvious errors. Seems like people are more worried about fame and glory than they are about making something that actually works. That’s just my two cents on it though. Do you guys agree?
Very much agreed, I'm sick of this, and most of the time they are garbage (no wonder why). Talking about slop, there is also the MapNG slop, which isn't as frequent now but still is present.
Apparently it seems to be more than AI mods that involve just AI-written codes. I saw one mod that added an AI-generated skin to the Covet. I haven’t seen any other AI skin mods though.
probably skins are left private (thank god), and in terms of code the situation is that one wants a feature but can't code, so they use ai which can make at least some working code, just the problem is that it's lame
I have absolutely nothing against AI mods, but with one very important caveat. I dont mind if someone uses AI as a tool or an assistant, it greatly simplifies the task while allowing the person to oversee the entire process and make changes at any moment. However I am completely opposed to someone using AI to create mods entirely without checking the code or verifying that it actually works. AI simply needs to be in the right hands
Problem is that the majority of these new mods fall into the latter, and somehow they have the audacity to get upset or even mad when called out on it
I must say, I don't like AI (because of all the ramifications that it's creating as a whole), and will always be much more fond of AI-free mods, in any form. However, objectively, I also believe that in the right hands it's a very good tool. Some mods have appeared that are AI-assisted and insanely good. It does simplfy tedious tasks and help with polishing stuff, I suppose. But that's on mods that use it right (some of my favorite examples are the HiStakes UI or the Radial Blur). I am very tired of dumb UI stuff that's just prompts and lousy code. And unfortunately, there's starting to be a lot of it. Though credit where credit is due. Some of these ideas (quite a lot of them, in fact) actually sound nice. It's not that they're bad, it's just... Lack of effort put in the end. Such a shame, really.
Become that very person who tests mods for functionality. By the way, my mod is written entirely with the help of AI, as I don't know Lua, but I have many years of experience working with other programming languages. And before publishing, I test the mod from the perspective of an ordinary player, looking for bugs and checking the console for errors so that you get a fully working mod.
Yeah, that's the thing. Using AI as an assist can mean many things, including it writing your own code. But that must be kept on check, or else it just becomes slop. I don't personally like it, but it is pretty useful in the end if you use it correctly. Also, I didn't even know the radial cheat menu was AI assisted! It's another great example of good AI use for a mod, in that case!
With AI-assisted "programming" you run into the problem of people having many "good" ideas but lack of knowledge to actually go through with it, and that's what we keep seeing when all these new mods pop up. I do agree AI is a helpful tool and as others have stated it's not just bad, but I seriously think we need to reconsider how open we want to be for it, and how we're going to limit the use. There are mods that pass the bar with AI, but it's nowhere near the majority and before it gets out of hand I do urge the devs to make some sort of ruleset for the future.
I think we should probably draw the line at actual AI spam (beyond slop) AI-assisted work at least has some time/care put into it to at least make it functional (my mod is also an AI-assisted project because I'm very bad at Lua; my experience is in JS). I'm able to experiment with some ideas and build prototypes that AI could expand upon. AI is also a great teacher for learning and working with APIs that aren't well documented. However, what really rubbed me the wrong way was when I saw this account [Ai god], posting literal AI spam (the poster even admitted to not having BeamNG, and the mod is completely untested). https://www.beamng.com/threads/career-jobs-v1-0.111538/ https://www.beamng.com/threads/policemode-v2.111536/ https://www.beamng.com/threads/policemode-bata-testing.111533/ I do think these are beyond redemption and have no place here.
Most likely some 12 year old discovering the forums for the first time. Jesus man, those threads are unhinged
I made a similar thread some time ago, suggested a solution, and got some responses, but no response from devs. I've also been quite vocal about repo moderation being inadequate (to say the least) for a while now, and the AI slop problem is only the tip of the iceberg.
https://www.beamng.com/resources/realistic-ai-traffic-behaviors.39276/ This has to take the cake for the most dysfunctional mod. Nothing works and it breaks the traffic. I know its ai because it has the same problem I encountered when vibe coding, when you tab off the player car the ai starts driving your car because the code is calling EVERY FRAME to make sure all cars the player is not currently driving is using traffic. At least I had the decency to not release the mod because of how buggy it was, and that after rewriting it myself it was still fucked up.
it's even better when the picture and the description is also AI generated, like seriously could they have not at least taken the time to make a picture and a proper description? And how did that even get approved if it breaks traffic?!
