Phoenix Motorsports: A Brief History
Phoenix Motorsports is a car brand from Brazil that started in 1946 by Luis Freitas. In 1991, Luis gifted the company to his son, Davi Freitas. Luis’ grandson, Gabriel Freitas II, became the owner in 2021 after his father, Davi Freitas, gave him the company.
Early Struggles and Success
The company almost went bankrupt in 1953 when their first model, the Phoenix Coati GT, was a failure and sold only 4 units. They were saved by a millionaire, Robert Charles, who invested $2.9 million for 13% of the company. He made a huge profit when he sold his shares in 1978 for $2.3 billion. Phoenix thanked him by giving him a Phoenix Coati GT Turbo, a rare and expensive car with only 2 in existence.
Modern Competition and Innovation
Today, the company competes with many famous brands in the car industry, such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg, Pagani, Bugatti, Audi, Porsche, Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, BMW, Mercedes, and others. Phoenix makes all kinds of cars, from supercars and sports cars to city, family, and pickup cars. The company is worth $79.9 billion.
Racing Achievements
Phoenix is also a successful racing team, having won Le Mans 6 times (1983, 1986, 2001, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010) and 72 Grand Prix since joining Formula One in 1981. Their most powerful car is the Phoenix Giaguaro, which can reach speeds of over 550 km/h.
Main Rivals
Phoenix’s main rival is Porsche, they have a kind of a bmw-mercedes relationship between them. But as Phoenix makes a lot of different types of cars, they have some other rivals, such as Koenigsegg and Bugatti in the hyper car industry, Audi, Mercedes and BMW in the more “normal but still premium” genre.
