Recently got a new laptop for school. It's actually quite nice, and I would hope so, it was $550. Not really a performer, but it's decent, I guess. Specs anyone?

    HP Pavilion 15-r30nr
    Intel Pentium N3530 Quad-Core @ 2.16 GHz (A real "screamer" of a chip)
4 GB Unknown speed DDR3L RAM
    500GB 5400 RPM HDD
    Intel HD Graphics (Maybe 4400? Maybe 4000? Maybe 4600? I don't know)
    Windows 8.1 (Eww)

I'm just surprised I found a quad core laptop for under $600. Again, it's not much of a performer, but I'm not doing so much gaming on it.

    Better get some coolin'

Actually, windows 8 is faster than 7 due to having less useless background processes. It just doesn't work well on really old PCs.
And they're adding a start menu anytime now so.. stay tuned :D

I've never had a problem with HP's cooling. We'll see when I get it, it hasn't arrived yet. I just prefer Windows 7 to 8. It's nothing to do with the stupid start menu (but it is dumb), I just don't enjoy using 8.

    What's different?
I highly recommend upgrading, it's plain faster.

I can't really put my finger on it, it just doesn't feel like Windows. It feels more like a mobile only operating system, so it doesn't work well on a desktop or a laptop for me.

and i say you didnt even ever had win8.1 in use ?!

srsly, i installed win 8.1 on more than 8 PC´s right now, after install and first boot up i get asked if i want windows to start to desktop - click on yes.
And now i have a perfect windows ?! whats the problem? Its fast, its easy to use (like win 7). Right klick on windows button down left corner, it opens the startmenu with even more funktions then windows 7 had.
The only thing which is different in that workflow is, i do a right click instead of a left click .....

everyone i installed windows 8.1 on didnt even had a problem using it ....

stop hating it please comon ....

As far as my experience with HP laptops goes, they sound and heat up like a jet engine.

Very true. I am on an HP ProBook 6465b that my school issues every student. When it starts up the fan is like 5 jet engines right in your ear. Then it is practically silent when idle, but if it gets hot it gets really frickin' loud.
