Are car engine designs copyrighted?

I know vehicle designs are copyright and thats why we dont have a 2017 Ford Mustang in the game, but the Ford Mustang engine model may be different? If I modeled the Ford Mustang engine would it be copyright infringement?

 

if it's branded as such, then yes. if it's an unbranded engine that just so happens to look like a coyote 5.0 or whatever, then it's fine.

 

Cool, I want to make the Cat Acert 32 engine, I won’t copy the exact design but it will be close, also how about if I name it “Kat Acert 32” will that be too close to the branded name??

 

if you making a construction engine that have the same specs and looks, most likely infringement but you can get away with it if you don't sell it.

 

I’ll try to make it look different in major ways but some parts will be very similar, that should be enough to avoid copyright unless Cat wants to really push it

 

Engine designs are usually patented, much like exterior designs.
