I recently got an Acer Aspire laptop from a friend and I played some BeamNG on it. While I was playing, I noticed the framerate would go from around 30 to 8 FPS, then back to 30. It would happen every 20 seconds or so. Is there a way to fix this?

I forgot to mention this, but I have no other programs open when I play BeamNG. I am tracking the CPU usage in task manager, and that's where I notice the CPU usage go up and then back down.

Specs? Are you using dedicated graphics?

Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1
6GB RAM, Intel Core I3 2350M CPU Dual Core @2.30 GHz
    64-Bit Operating System, x64-Based Processor
    450 GB HDD
No dedicated graphics, only integrated. Also it seems the performance dips only occur when the laptop is plugged in. On battery, BeamNG runs pretty smoothly (20-30 FPS) on lowest settings, no performance dips.
    Any ideas?

In-game press F1 (FN +F1 on laptops), go to the PERFORMANCE tab, then recreate the fps spike. Once it happens, press alt+o and copy here the link you get.

That isn't exactly powerful stuff you got, so I'm not sure it will be possible to fix that problem without upgrading.

Are your cores parked, if not I suggest parking them. Download this software, and unpark all them. If that doesn't help, make sure that your using all your cores, I use to have a issue where BeamNG would only use 1 core, I eventually got it fixed though.

Also I ran a test. BeamNG does the same thing when the CPUs are parked or unparked.

What are your CPU temps? Could be overheating.

How long do you usually play when it happens maybe its just overheating?

They both sit around 70 degrees celcius while playing BeamNG and 60 degrees idle on battery, plugged in they sit around 50 degrees on idle and around 70-75 while plugged in running beamng.
This issue starts as soon as i start playing beamng, and even after shutting down the computer and letting it sit for about an hour, then starting beamng, no change.

Does it idle at 70 degree celsius or fahrenheit if celcius its probably thermal throttling then id advise you to give it a good clean

All of the stuff i said above is in celcius. Probably not a bad idea to clean it out though.

Nah, my GPU runs at 70C all day and it never shows any signs of slowing.
Now I need you @Joeyfuller2000 to do the instructions I've shown above.

Cpu usage jumping up and down at set intervals, alternating, is usually thermal throttling. 70~75C will cause thermal throttling on some laptop computers.
This is what happens when you play Beamng.drive on a laptop. Please use a gaming-ready desktop, if possible, or buy a 'laptop cooler' which is the size of the laptop and goes under it, which may help while you are gaming at home.
Laptops should be cleaned 2~6 times a year depending on how much you use it and how dirty an environment you have it in. Get it cleaned once and see how cool it is (or do it yourself with a can of air), and when it won't keep it's cool temps anymore, clean it again. Be aware if you do it yourself, if you dismantle it and it's not out of warranty, it voids the warranty in most cases.
