Is this system something that can (potentially) be scaled up (in terms of speed and accuracy) nicely (for a racing AI) or is it more like a really nice hack and better suited for common traffic on East Cost for example?

General traffic usually requires many many cars, BeamNG has no hope of fully simulating that many cars unless they create some really simple ones. My assumption is that this is designed to be like the AI in generally. If you want to know more about that my suggestion is that you download generally (its free) and make a map in the map editor or view a map that someone else has made and you will see how that game does it. You will see that the AI in generally is quite similar to how BeamNG AI seems to function in the video. If they put 3 cars from BeamNG following one track it would be interesting to see the result.

The question really wasn't about if we were to see traffic with this (as it's entirely impossible at this point because of the performance penalty) but more about the possibilities of the technology.
Using the Way point mod we can already implement traffic like routes but the mod really isn't all that useful for fast line guidance as it's required for some sort of race AI. Seeing that devs are working on braking algorithms it looks like this is a lot more sophisticated and might be useful for actually fast way point following. :)

Estama and me worked on improving the AI, the stipped bolide can drive the course now without spinning out or locking the brakes :)

However, still no collision avoidance ^^

Will there be an option to turn collision avoidance on/off?

Finally finished with our own media upload site, that should once and for all fix the problems with embedding cross platform images and videos:

    http://media.beamng.com

    Example gallery of mine: http://media.beamng.com/IuhbLdmRnB4uPWRxjk5URm2JnkBPdnZc

Example of embedded videos (using webm and flash fallbacks):

    Code:
    [ mvideo ]http://media.beamng.com/lAeXBIzZrQBGKZzM[/ mvideo ]
    [ mvideo ]http://media.beamng.com/hKWKzy8D5k1jPUYA[/ mvideo ]
Video - Click to Play - Direct Link

Feel free to use, however: we might close access to to this to the public at any point (disk space, misuse, etc)

Just tried this out and I have to say it works fantastically well. No more freezing when rewinding and it has a nice interface. The fullscreen mode is just an icing on the cake. :)

Hope that it works well :)

Just added the ability to set the time that is used to generate the thumbnail for (so you can set it to somewhere in the middle in case you fade in the video):

oh, and look a new bbcode tag appears:
