Instead of medical institutes (standford university) building supercomputers to manipulate various proteins and stuff, they can farm it out to Folders (you), who compute the data then send it back to them. That's why you're "folding for a cure" presumably for cancer or some horrible disease.
My question is whether it is doing something. Sure, we are trying to solve cancer and Alzheimer's, but, in the long run, will this program and the thousands of people who pitch come to the conclusion, or will it all be done in the lab. I can imagine seeing this on the news: "Computers solve leukemia!" ot: 500th POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What you are doing is preventing companies researching the cures having to pay vast vast sums of money to purchase supercomputer time to run the huge amounts of number crunching they need to do. Supercomputers are expensive. Required for the research being done though and sadly the researchers can't always afford to rent supercomputer time. Large distributed networks of computers can do the task of a supercomputer. Folding at home essentially clusters large numbers of computers as a crude supercomputer, you are therefore donating a small amount of computational time allowing research money to be spent elsewhere.
