Not really. It looks kinda dated (and even worse looking than the Isetta).
You meant "could've", because it definitely didn't sell well if barely anyone knew about it.
There were likely still other (and better) options that those rental companies probably offered.
Wouldn't most cars of that time be if it's not going to be a military vehicle?

It looks dated to you. That's your opinion. In 1958 cars looked like this:
Really curvy and with chrome bits everywhere. The Shelter with its squary design and lack of unesecary chrome bits looked really modern and closer to the 60s - early 70s cars than other cars did.

I meant that today almost no one knows about it.

Yeah but in the Netherlands it was\would be a go-to solution, considering the fact that it was made in the Netherlands and it was/would be cheaper than the other respective cars.

And no that is the broad statement

Completely doubt it. 60s cars still had plenty of chrome.

Also, it doesn't look square-y at all, looks very curvy.
Probably still didn't sell that well to be recognizable like the Isetta (which looks 100x better than the Shelter)

Even the Isetta had more uses than the Shelter though.

Also, why in the name of fuck is it called "Shelter"? That's completely the most unfitting car name ever that would even beat Ford's Pinto and a few others.

It didn't look futuristic, it looked spartan. 60s cars were minimalistic, but not spartan - what they lacked in splendor was made up by the crispiness and well-thought-out trim placement (in fact, there was more 60s chrome, but it was in more fitting places).

And who cares if it was cheap, if you could buy an used Beetle, Mini, 500/600, 2CV, etc. - actual cars, not these sorry exuses - for less?

    1958 car:

    Also 1958 car:

    1970 car:

    1958 car:

Shelter on its own isn't a bad name for a car, but it is unfitting. But at the same time it fits it quite a bit. I can't imagine it having another name. Anyway, the reason it failed was easily breakable axles and engine fires.

I'm getting off-topic right now but you. You haven't agreed in a SINGLE thing I've ever said since my signing in on this site...

I must say you live up to your name

I see no similarities at all between any of them, except maybe a bit of the 1st image of the Shelter and the 1st car.

Yeah, calling that a decent car is more farfetched than calling the Sebring a good car, now that I think about it.
It's unfitting, but it is a completely bad name for a microcar, especially that it has 0% to do with actual shelters. I'd be hiding in a shelter from that horrendous design though.

I would really like to own one. Couldn't the issues be fixed? At least the sensitive axles? I'm not sure about the engine though...

And we see that the Shelter is a quintessentially 50s car - non-flush headlamps, curvaceous lines, aerodynamic rear styling, wraparound rear window, body mouldings...

Here are good 60s design representations:

You'd still have a spartan, undersized car.

Unlikely, especially since the original maker is probably dead by now and that there's going to be near-to-no experts on said vehicle.
So you don't care about accidentally being killed by your own vehicle?

Funfact, Arnold van der Goot is still alive and well, and he's the honored member of DWAC.

Also, I don't mean that I wouldn't mind getting killed by my owned vehicle. That would be terrible, but it would amazing to be the owner of such car.

I doubt he really cares about the Shelter nowadays as he did back in the late 50s.
You sure, especially after mentioning engine fires?
It wouldn't be amazing, but atleast you can be driving the Dutch "clown car" I guess.

Funfact again: He was really passionate about the Shelter. He still is.The restoration of a Shelter, was quided by him I think.

That's why I asked if the problems mentioned are fixable

IMO it would be amazing becuase I would be driving the most bizarre looking car on the city

...and everyone else would either not give a fuck about that, or laugh at you (and the car as well).

Also, be lucky if you can even find one nowadays.

Unfortunately there is only one or two surviving today... The one with the "ZP-48-91" plate and the other with a "ZK-67-29"
