I will definitely have some time trials of all kinds! I'm not sure how long they will be, but I already have a good route for asphalt, gravel, and dirt rally. Thank you. I don't currently have a railway planned, as most of the terrain is too steep for a realistic railway. However maybe in the future I will consider adding a small railway through the valley. (With a couple bridges)
Now this map looks amazing; I would love to use it for pursuit, etc. Any update you want to put on the map, cuz my suggestion is putting a random simplified spaghetti junction, connecting to the main highway and out of it (your choice)? Keep up the effort.
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback and good idea! Some of my roads, such as the ones in question, are based on the real life version. Technically this major highway is not a part of the interstate system, so unless it were a high traffic area it technically won't need a ramp or spaghetti junction. That may change in the future, but I do already have a one sided ramp planned in a higher traffic area of the map.
You said that you shouldn't build a railway because it would look unnatural, but I don't see any extremely steep mountains in the images you posted.
They aren't extremely steep, but most railroads don't go over 4-6%. My elevation gain is about 900ft/300m to the top of the plateau. To make it realistic it would need to be over 3+ miles long uphill and even then may have too tight of switchbacks for a train with any length. I have a valley it could go through to make it look somewhat realistic, but it would be hard to place it there with some of my current plans in that location. A railway would be a big project. I know almost nothing about trains/railroads, so research would be necessary. This map being so large is already hugely ambitious, so for now I'm gonna keep the scope a bit smaller. I love the idea of having a railway, and may add it to the project eventually.
Caney Ridge's massive playable area is far from finished, but progress is being made! Here is a small portion of a highway going up to the top of the plateau.
After some thought, I have decided to reset my terrain heightmap. Now that I've had a bit more practice, I am going to make the roads even higher quality all while keeping the raw terrain more intact around the roads. That means more realistic road camber, width, drainage, and ditches. This will end up taking a bit more time, but I still have all of my lines, edges, asphalt, AI, and mesh roads present. Just a lot of fine tuning to do.
The recent heightmap reset is 20% redone. With the warm weather, I am swamped with work and personal events. Progress is slow for now.
Still super busy with work and life in general, but the heightmap reset is coming along nicely. I'd guess about 40% back to how it was, but with significantly more detail.
Thanks! It's coming along nicely. I'm going with more realistic (and unforgiving) road widths. Lots of time being put into just the road shape and decals currently.
