What about a "slip-and-grip" style part time all wheel drive system like many modern vehicles have? (Honda CRV, Rav4, etc.)
Power could be routed to the front or rear wheels until the system demands traction from the other axle. This could be due to hard acceleration, ground surface, uneven terrain, and so on.
Alternatively, drive modes on a vehicle with a traditional center differential could be fun too. My Forester XT has some sport, eco, and off-road settings that would be great on a vehicle like the Sunburst.
There's already a mod like that for the Old Pessima and Sunburst, it's called a Active Differential
I must say that it really works on higher-powered versions of the Pessima, like my custom supercharged V6 wagon thing.
