EXPERIMENTAL: Vehicle Livery Creator / Dynamic Decals

    With the release of v0.31 we've introduced an early preview of the Dynamic Decals system. Currently, it includes the following features:
    • Create layers (Decal layers/Fill layers/Group layers)
    • Edit layers
    • Hide/Show layers
    • Highlight decal layers
    • Move layers in the layer stack
    • Delete layers
    • Initial controller support
    • Hotkeys for adjusting decal settings
    • Change camera views
    • History (Undo/Redo)
    • Save/Load projects
    • Export projects as skins
    You can access the decal editor via the garage mode.

    Please note that this is only an experimental, early preview.
    Should you encounter any issues or if you have suggestions or feedback, please share them in this thread.

    Known issues:
    • Keyboard shortcuts (scale, skew, rotate) do not work while editing a decal layer

    This could potentially pave the way for doing scratches, and then Beam will finally surpass Forza not 8's "really good damage model system."

    This is very promising, if developed further it could be on par with Forza's livery editor.

    Is there a way to add custom decals? I've checked the editor and browsed the game files, but I couldn't seem to have found the location where the decals are saved (assuming that it's even possible to add custom ones).
    I might have overlooked it, but if there actually isn't a way, I suppose that's a suggestion for future updates :)

    The location of the decals are in "wherever you installed the game \ BeamNG.drive \ gameengine.zip \ art \ dynamicDecals \ textures"

    I only know because it was the very first thing I looked for once the update dropped.
    I can use them for skins made without their new decal editor, although I kinda hoped they'd be .svg format.

    Woah that’s very well thought out, I can imagine the police liveries I could make. But if I can give you an idea, do it the same way as the APB reloaded game. Or you can select the parts of the vehicles like the doors, the hood, the bumper etc... then fill in a color. (simple to make two-tone or police designs ex: black and white) and a system where we add stickers (square, triangle... etc.) and a second editor to create personalized stickers ex: police badges or company emblems. the APB game works like that for vehicles and it would be nice to have a similar system to create our skins. In any case I like the idea. And also I saved and exported my test skin and I can't spawn it on my car in driving mode.

    Hi their. there is a problem with the saving cars config it does not work. When I try to make and save a car I've made it reverts back to the original car and not mine. This is for all cars and props in the game I've already cleared my cach and it didn't work I can't think of anything else all my mods are deactivated and all the cars I build are with vanilla parts.

    Well this is going to make skin creation INFINITELY easier once it's implemented fully.

    2 suggestions:
    • Add the ability to enable/disable a grid overlay to help align decals. Maybe we can adjust the density of this overlay also.
    • Add a folder the user can dump their own images into

    Were you able to add your own images without issues? I'm a bit nervous about repacking the whole gameengine.zip file.

    I haven't tried it, but you should be able to add your own as a mod, just follow the folder structure.

    Ah...holy f*ck, that works. Looks like sh*t though and it's forced into a square aspect ratio initially but that's really cool.

    I hadn't tried adding files of my own yet, no.
    But, it's nice to know it does actually work - apparently you'll just need to make all of your decals have a square aspect ratio beforehand?

    Upon messing around with this, here are a few things that can be improved/added:

    -tutorial (this is probably already planned, but it would be nice)
    -ability to flip decals
    -more hotkeys (such as ctrl + z, arrow keys for finer movements of decals)
    -ability to select multiple decals at the same time (editing them will make it act as if it is one decal)
    -ability to move decals in the edit menu after placing it
    -ability to make multi-colored skins (for example, being able to assign decals to color #1, #2, or #3,)
    -being able the click and drag layers above or beneath others instead of having to spam buttons. (this could also be used to drag layers into groups)

    that's about all I guess :)

    How do I get my skins to work in freeroam? I've made a skin for the bus and exported it, but it doesn't seem to be working.
