Here's another video of an 8x8 Argo doing a U-turn in water. The 8x8 Wydra can't do that at all - I'm not sure if even the 4x4 Wydra could do that.

That's one area the old Beaver mod beats the new Wydra - the Canadian vehicle can clip along at 5 mph (8 km/h) in still water, while the Polish one can only manage...1.5 mph? It's certainly not quite as fast. Granted, 5 mph is way too fast for an Argo in still water, but 2.5-3 mph isn't. The Beaver also turns plenty well enough in water to do Initial D-style river drifting at full throttle, whereas the 8x8 Wydra handles like a barge, even while turning at below half-throttle.

(I'm not sure why going below half-throttle would make the 8x8 Wydra turn better, but that's the only way I've gotten it to steer in any significant amount in the wet stuff.)

Granted, there are plenty of other areas the 8x8 Wydra has the Beaver beat - it's quicker, has more tuning and customization options, can go faster, and is way better on pavement. The Beaver can barely turn at all around the streets of Belasco, whereas the 8x8 Wydra can skid around and pull mad donuts everywhere.

Oh, and I just measured the stock 8x8 Wydra - its body is 3.16 m long, 1.62 m wide, and 1.08 m high from the top of the seatback to the bottom of the tub. (Its height is 1.84 m with the cab.) So, it's a bit shorter than the Pigeon (3.28 m), while being almost as wide as the base Hopper (1.65 m) and almost as tall as the Scintilla (1.1 m) without the cab. It also seems to be between the Mudd-Ox XL and Argo Aurora in size, styling, and mechanicals.

Compared to the Aurora 800, it's 14 cm longer and 10 cm wider, and it seems to be about the same height.

Compared to the XL, it's 4 cm shorter and 10 cm narrower, although the XL might be quite a bit taller.

The 4x4 Wydra is a massive 2.86 m wide - which is wider than even the Wentward (that's 2.67 m wide) - and shares the 8x8's heights and length.

(There are other non-North-American XTVs, like the Turkish Gorax Foxter and the British electric Green Scout. Some XTVs, like the LiteTrax MuddTrax MTX-R, use tracks instead of wheels - that'd be quite an interesting way to get a tracked vehicle in-game, although it might need to be under a different brand from FPU.)

Also, I took all the Wydra variants for a bit of hotlapping around Hirochi Racway. 2 laps, forward, no rolling start on an Xbox controller with no assists. It wasn't nearly as difficult to hotlap as I thought it'd be, although my laptimes in the Custom variant were rather scuffed.

Could someone please make a mod to add paddled wheels to this thing so it runs like the beaver or it's 4x4 counter part? Thing is too slow in the water with 8 wheels.

any chance you are using the "arcade steering" mod? I find that that makes the wydra undrivable and burns the clutch easily

That mod shouldn't be needed anymore, they have an official solution for it in the base game.

I still find that that mod improves the driving feel and smoothness for me on a controller actually

Yeah, this and the Rockbasher don't have any years, and the years for the Autobuggy are a bit whack.

In all seriousness, with all the LEDs on this vehicle and its very aggressive styling, this is most likely a late-2010s vehicle. It could even be currently in production.

I just found how "real" Polish Wydra looks like.

    AMZwydra.jpg

AMZ Wydra, also amphibious prototype (probably only one build) from 2013/14.

No offense to the devs, but I kinda like that one better than the current one. Maybe it could be a separate FPU model?

Given that the first Argo vehicles and the first Melex came out around the same time, my backstory for the Wydra would have been a Polish company making a small offroader instead of a golf cart-like thing in the early 70s.

Though I guess the startup story works too.
