This is an interesting read: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-41985715 It's an article as to why Diesels were pushed by the UK government in particular. Apparently the whole things boils down to not wanting to push an unpopular legislation that would have penalised people for buying diesel vehicles. But adversely they ended up promoting them through policy created due to that fear. It also states that the government was aware of the health effects that diesel cars could have while making these decisions.
So news on my brothers car search: we have a budget of 15k euros for a r32 or r33 gts4 we locked mostly into the r32 as its the better loocking but what would be some alternatives as parts for skylines can be quite expensive and 15k seems to be a rather tight budget. The car must be japanese around 20 years old and it shouldnt be such a obvious choice
That's if he doesn't mind a s l o w boi. I'd deffinantly own a kei car, as it's something abit different to what everyone else is driving, and yet still manages to be fun to own. I'm guessing it's probably not what you're looking for though, seeing as you're looking at Skylines... If I were doing the same car search as you, I'd probably be interested in S13 Silvia's. But they're pretty much out of the price range...
I love the S13s too but they are quite expensive sometimes on par with r32 gtrs if you want a grade 4.5. @aljowen I was actually thinking of buying a Alto works as they are really cool but my brother doesnt want them
Hemi Chargers are definitely muscle cars, and you won't miss out on mopar unreliability with one either. Crown Vics are good cars. A little less easy to put in a ditch than a charger, but easy none the less.
To add to this, I've got a turbo Legacy Wagon that I learned to drive in. I'm lucky that my parents let me have it, especially with how quick it is. The problem with it is that -me being me- it really encourages me to have a heavy right foot. As much as I love having it, I would recommend the naturally aspirated engine for a first time driver. It'll be cheaper and won't tempt you to drive faster. It's still a fun car though, so it wouldn't be a bad choice. A cheaper car like 6677 mentioned would definitely be a safer choice though, because then you don't have to worry (too much) about damaging them.
I also have an NA Impreza (winter car) and while mine isn't fast, it is a hell of a lot of fun. I drive mine like a maniac practically everywhere bouncing off the rev limiter, heel toeing gears, sliding it around corners... all while not even getting close to the speed limit and getting about 26mpg! Its great! Plus... the thing is unstoppable. Mine is a 95 but it will go anywhere any 4x4 could attempt and some places that they can't. Snow might as well be sugar to it as it gobbles that stuff up like nothing. Woods trails, jumps, mud holes, you name it, my Impreza will get you there... but more importantly... it will get you back out as well! Edit: Before anyone gets up in arms of accusing me of abusing a nice car, this Impreza I am talking about I bought off Craigslist for 500 bucks. It has a 1.8L with over 272,000 miles on the clock and was actually sitting in a junk yard ready to be scrapped before I bought it. So while I do abuse it a bit... I technically saved it from becoming scrap.
Any Ford or Audi with an Inline 5 will also be pretty fast and sound fairly nice. However it will probably be front wheel drive, which is probably ideal for a first car, but might not be what you want.
There is only one solution. Find a solution that will mitigate the city smog effects of too many diesels without requiring or encouraging removal or modification of existing cars. Identify the politicians and bureaucrats who directly or indirectly helped that policy to be put in place. Then, get the money for the first of those things directly from the second. Not likely to happen, but I can dream, can't I?
Oml that new roadster is sexy. EDIT: Looking it up now it's even better. 200kWh battery, 1.9s 0-60, only 4.2 to 100mph, and the quarter mile in 8.9. Over 250mph top speed and 600 miles of highway cruising. Oh, and 7,374 lb-ft of torque. Holy Jesus Christ
I am going to have a hard time getting use to the lack of a grille on electric cars, it just looks so odd without it. And the semi is still ugly as hell.
Its also a 4 seater (2+2) and apparently has a large amount of luggage space. So you can actually use it for road trips. However you can't comfortably fit adults in the back. The truck also does 0-60 in 5 seconds which is quite impressive. With a 400mile charge in 30mins.
Buy something out of his comfort zone as Skylines are over done and boring. See if you can find an early 80s Mitsubishi Sigma or Nissan Laurel.
