And my bet is no more than 8 years from the S class from being fully self driving, or whenever the next full generation is after 8 years since I doubt they'd redo the platform if they had a sudden AI breakthrough.

Humans are naturally resistant to change. The fact the Chuck doesn't bend over and spread his ass cheeks for whatever is over the horizon is not necessarily a bad thing. Change has led to plenty of good in the past, but it has also led to a generation of people so hungry for internet fame, or just so stupid, that they will eat laundry detergent.
Why were 2018 cars already out in 2017? Because car manufacturers use time warps to be 4 months ahead of us.
It's really because either it's gonna be popular that next year after release, or it's the official year that it's made in. Examples include the 2018 Camry, Odyssey, and the LaCrosse Avenir.
