Well that's pretty interesting after all. Wait, are Xeons so expensive for the same reason then? AND (pun intended), are iPhones and the Samsung Galaxy S series professional workstation phones?
But really: How hard can hacking the GPUs BIOS to make the card think it's something better be anyway?

    Yes.

Edit: Long answer is sort of. Partially yes, but they also have support for more instruction set extensions, deeper pipeline, more PCI-E lanes, ECC memory, etc. So they are actually more expensive to make.

xeons are genuinely more expensive to make with a higher binning rate and a load of extensions plus extra peripherals and a deeper pipeline

Erm, yeah. That kinda makes sense, I guess...

Workstation GPUS cost significantly more for other reasons (In addition to "Workstation certified" crap). One of the main reasons is the... how do I say it... "accuaracy" (Not really the correct word, but close enough) of the workstation GPUs. What I mean is workstation GPUS will give you the same result more consistently than a consumer grade GPU, the sort of small stuff most people wouldn't notice, but can make a difference in getting a smooth seam or a jagged edge in movie animating, or the tiniest miscalculation in the incredibly precise stuff, like aerodynamic simulations for spaceships re-entering the atmosphere, or simulating pressure on a proposed submarine design. I believe they have ECC memory as well.

No. A Quadro M6000 has exactly the same GM110 chip as a Titan X. Lower end Quadro cards run on lower end chips. Same goes for AMD, the W4300 mentioned before has the same cut-down Bonaire GPU you see in the R7 260.

Some cards do have ECC memory, but the GPU itself isn't any different.

High end cards may have higher double precision compute enabled, and EEC memory. Also, certification is required for some programs to run.

Not sure about AMD cards, but the M6000 has the same 1/32 DP performance as the Titan X.

That is sad. They used to have increased DP at least, maybe not now. Especially Kepler.

GK200 had 1/3 DP performance, not just for Quadro cards. The 780Ti and Titan did as well.

Well, it's official, I'm attending college as an I.T. major in the fall.

And reading some of the stories on /r/talesfromtechsupport, I have one hell of a ride coming in 4 years.

Corsair released some SFX PSUs. They're 80+ Gold, fully modular, available in 450 and 600W. All Japanese caps. Nice.

strange they don't have corsair link though, they're pitching towards that end of the market. Not really all that necessary a feature at least.

half tempted to get an sfx power supply and perhaps make an adapter to fit it to an atx bay, my case is cramped

The 360 is slower than the 950, but it's cheaper and uses less power: something like 50W, which is even less than the 750Ti. Think of it sitting between the 750Ti (maybe even GT 740) and the 950.

That's an argument. I always thought that AMD cards draw more power throughout the bank, but this is astonishing.
