You can put a MSATA SSD in your T420 if you can live with out having the WWAN card, it will fit right in that slot and work perfectly, that's what I did with mine, you can keep the HDD for storage space then. the quad core I7's are unofficially supported thus the can get a little hot under load, the cooler isn't designed for them you see, get a program called ThinkPad fan control, great bit of software, and if you really want to you could cram 16gigs of RAM into it. Again Lenovo says only 8GB but you can totally run it with 16GB.
Don't think I'll need more than 8GB, also the i5 is fine for now. Also mSATA is expensive and I really don't need the extra storage, even if I did it's probably cheaper to get the 2.5" adapter and stick the SSD in the ODD bay.
im sitting here with my w510. im really happy with it too. I put 16gb ram in it, it has a 7200rpm 500gb drive, and i have a spare 1tb that im thinking of putting in the ODD bay. CPU wise it has a i7 720qm, i wanna go 920xm, but not sure if its worth the upgrade. i got the thing off craiglist for $100 and a sandisk ssd.
Beast of a machine, if you can find a 920xm cheap it's worth it, only thing I don't like about the *10 series ThinkPad's is the lack of Msata SSD support, I love Msata SSD's, can you guess?
I run one in each of my laptops. My windows laptop has one natively. From factory, 32gb set up as a raid write cache drive. I replaced with 128gb and disabled the raid controller so it is now my boot device with a 1tb HDD. My macbook has one in a mSATA to SATA adapter card which is wedged in a rules booklet for magic the gathering which is wedged into a 2.5" adapter in the optical drive bay. --- Post updated --- sorely tempted to try installing crunchbang++ on the MacBook ssd
Moved my PC into the EVGA Hadron Air; another cramped m-itx case because it seems I enjoy split knuckles and bending cables far beyond what they should do. It's immediately quieter than the Node 202, and my GPU now idles at reasonable temperatures. Unfortunately either the dinky little power supply fan or the power supply itself is whining, but alas, the sun has set many hours ago and I'm not going to fix it right now. Anyway, the Node 202 is being re-purposed as the office PC with an i3 6100 + 8GB DDR4 + iGFX. Fun stuff, all the parts are here for that build except for the SSD boot drive.
If I was to get a ThinkPad, I'd want one with a blue enter/return key and keys like the T420. I hate the newer design of the keyboards. Why did they change the design?
not much but they've been known to run out. A case of 1gb ain't enough but 4 overkill the main issue is they're 64 bit. 64 bit instructions use more ram and any 64 bit optimised data will also use more ram. Yet in the upgrade from 32 to 64 they didn't expand.
on 32 bit yes. I'd say 2 is bare minimum for 64. iPhones only have 1gb coupled with one of the weakest graphics chips on the market.
been too long coming. Apple can continue making mid range at best handsets for all I care and charging flagship prices. I wont ever buy one. I have owned a 5S, it was horrid.
Well then... Seems like we'll have a long way to go until we can actually build our phones ourselfs, if ever. Would be an idea for Laptops anyway. I remember when my classmate came to me when I was searching for a Smartphone. He opened apple.com and said "I can only recommend this. Or" - He opened samsung.com - "this. Those are the way to go." Don't worry, I knew that he is a douchebag before. Oh, btw, I haven't searched for a phone since then. I just didn't have the nerves to.
Just buy something inexpensive and durable. And if you go for the Nokia 635, get the model with 1GB of RAM.
The 735 seems nice as well. I'd probably go with that rather, except if there's a serious disadvantage against the 635.
good power supply + silicon lottery = 1.6Ghz stable at +10 voltage and by stable I mean stress tested with Unigine Haven for about half an hour. I put the side panel back on right near the end there and that's why it went from 70 to 78 degrees. Also, using stock fan curve so it's a bit toastier than I would like. cry me a river @BlueScreen
My Motorola Moto E 2nd gen is working fine for me. $40, no contract, quad core, 1 gb of RAM- all most people need. And that microSD card is a lifesaver.
