Just put the cooler on it, it will stay cool enough to post and verify everything is working. Just don't let it run for too long.

Good news, I found some old thermal past, and it seems like everything is working. Haven't tested all the ram slot, but cpu is working fine.

 

Just been in a voice call with a friend as he was installing his new water-cooler (He got it second hand, and it didn't have brackets and such. So we had to wait about a month to get them posted by the company's support. I'll point out now, he specifically requested for 1151 stuff)
Anyway, we (He, I did the motivational help stuff) somehow end up basically rewiring the entire PC, ripping stuff out the case to make the cooler fit, and after about 3 and a half hours (We're not the quickest at anything), we had the motherboard in place, radiator on, all that good stuff. Backplate thing for the cooler was in place, and he went to put the bracket on... I assumed all was not fine, since I just kept hearing 'why doesn't it fit' over and over, each time it sounding more filled with despair. Turns out, the back plate was 1151, and the bracket was for an AMD CPU. Ofcourse, we could've checked this before starting, but we're not that smart... (Also, it literally said AMD on the bag it came in, so yeah...)

I had a great 3:30 hours. Listened to some music, played some games, all good stuff. I fail to see why didn't enjoy it as much

-Switch from my FX-8350 to an Intel i5-8600k
-MSI 970A-G43 Plus to an MSI Tomahawk Z370 (LGA 1151 Series 300) mobo.
-Current 1866MHz 16GB Viper 3s to 16GB 2667MHz Viper Elites ram sticks
-Hyper 212x cooler (already ordered because FX is throttling)

How protected are electrical devices against usb killers? I know that some car have safety features so that if you plug it into an port in your car it'll only fry the port.

 

A lot of modern devices have fused USB ports, just sometimes the fuse doesn't blown in time, though if you're lucky the fuse will blow and like you mention you'll just have a dead USB port which could be fixed by replacing or jumping the fuse, if you're unlucky the USB controller will blow before the fuse thus killing the device.

 

Fuse is usually of the slow blow variety to help protect against the way many USB devices outright ignore the USB inrush current spec, some are momentary direct short on 5v to ground and would blow a regular fuse too quickly and most PSUs will handle the brief short. Alas, means USB killer will also get a chance to dump voltage back.

Hmmmm so my monitor has a text mode for viewing text and the results are surprising, like i thought it was just blurry because it has a poor TN panel but it's pretty well up to IPS spec.
This is on my VS XG2401 btw.
But unfortunately it locks the brightness to 100% which causes your retinas to catch fire in a dark room

 

Got my thinkpad all setup and how I want it. Ended up with an x220 tablet in the end, its nice and portable so i prefer it over the T420 i had for a while. It needed the wrist rest replaced and i got a dock to use it with my TV to save connecting it all the time. Pretty happy with it overall.



Also speaking of USB killers, thought I had done in my thinkpad about 4 days after I bought it, plugged in a USB and the whole thing shutdown and wouldn't come back on. Had to take the battery out and back in before it would boot. Turns out the left USB is a bit bent and lets stuff go in upside down and that just kills it..

Im currently thinking about getting a smartwatch as a local electronics shop currently has a good deal on the Samsung gear S3 classic for 249euros and i have got 129 euros for my old headset because i got a refund on it. So has anyone experience with the samsung gear?

 

Spotify always seems to cause "DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION" BSOD, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. Websites seem to point towards driver issues?

I have no idea what to do.

 

I'm sure there's a thing which allows you to look into the BSOD info more, and see what drivers were last to do stuff and such. I can't remember what it was called, but it shouldn't be too hard to Google. That should help with atleast figuring out which driver is causing an issue

Using my grandads iPhone 5S kinda confirms this Apple slowdown thing. It's getting on a bit and even just scrolling there are a few stutters here and there. If it throttles like this in normal mode imagine in battery saver!
It ran fine before iOS 11. And a nearly 70yr olds use case isn't exactly heavy.

 

I wish they'd make battery changing easier instead (Not that that'll happen in my lifetime). Slowing down the phones as a solution is disgusting, especially since every other part of the phone is normally still working fine.
