They must've had crappy tires, or texting (or both).. I saw him swerving, snow flying everywhere then went up on the curb and I heard a BOOM, into the tree. He wasn't even going that fast

Of course for some time there will be nonsense posts from nonsense member like him, but there is bit more about this.

    Let me explain.

So what we respond in situations like this is going to define how much effect such activity will have, all such member can do is causing temporal mess, if we completely ignore that mess there won't be much effect after moderators finally clean up.

Just ignoring will make moderators job bit easier, but also those trying to create mess will see it is no use to create a mess because we just ignore them.

Then there is another aspect, you probably have read about Russian troll factory? In bigger picture we Internet users need to learn how to counteract such things effectively.
Let it be disinformation by Russian trolls or just general disturbance most effective way to counteract such is not to get into their game in first place, sure just ignoring is not feeling good, we would like to make a point, show them what we are made of, but that is exactly what those community braking forces want, that is what their methods are based on and their methods don't work when we ignore.

Not just ignoring by forum software, but ignoring content they put up (messages etc.) so that we don't show any kind of response, idea is to be a black hole that does not reflect anything, no matter what action is, that will make their efforts useless.

Hence we must be united silent wall in this modern war on Internet.

Ok. I have never driven in snow, how slippery is it compared to dry roads?

It varies quite a bit, depending from temperature, amount of traffic, even different tires change their grip different amount when temperature moves to colder.

Generally speaking around half the grip, but it can be a lot less at places, but again some summer tires become skis with any snow, while other summer tires can have some grip, all terrain or winter tires then change the game completely, so that with a good winter tires, you loose only something like 30% of grip compared to warm pavement with summer tires.

Big thing however is variability and fact that it is not flat surface, but you have hard surface and on top of that some loose snow, if it is slush, then it is like aquaplaning but a LOT lower speeds, it is sometimes bit hard to know exact available grip or if aquaplaning kind of situation is going to happen and at what speed.

Without experience it is quite difficult to drive on snow without really good winter tires as estimating available grip is not going to be easy, you have to know temperature, wind and what temperature has been, as well as amount of traffic, to really be able to tell what kind of grip is to be excepted.

That is never been in any game, everything is way too constant always, too little variables so it is not going to be as interesting as driving in reality.

For example you can double amount of grip at some conditions by moving car 1ft to right, I wish that level of snow could be some day in games.

It can get very slippery, depending on how much there is. But my road really isn't that bad, so not sure why he lost control

Thanks for the response! It sounds similar to how the rain can be, but with less grip and harder to estimate. When driving in the rain, the puddles have a similar effect to what you described, but you can see where the car will get the most grip. I can image it would be harder to do so in the snow because the white can mess with perception and make it hard to see the details of the terrain.

Also instead of puddle, you have two 'rails' where wheels plow stuff out, then between those two 'rails' you can have 4 inch deep wet slush, which gets you sliding at the moment you touch the stuff at above 60Mph, with some cars, tires and conditions it can be as low as 30-40Mph.

Then there is rolling resistance, I remember once that it got bit heavy on snowing while I was driving non turbo diesel car, it was 3rd gear and throttle floored that got me up to that 40Mph, it just didn't have more, after half an hour temps started to be bit high, so had to stop to cool off and after stopping, getting going was bit of a chore etc.

I haven't driven on desert, but there might have something similar, also mud trails in off road can have something similar, but still snow and ice is pretty special.

Oh yeah, white + it tends to be always pitch black, so you see what your car's lights show, then oncoming traffic makes it hard to see, sometimes there are some animals or even people on road etc. It is much more interesting than summer driving, that's for sure.

Yeah we have those "rails" here too, but they act slightly different. The roads near me get worn down a lot, so puddles tend to form in them. They are dangerous at high speeds because the car can hydroplane. The main issue is that the "rails" are where the cars wheels are positioned normally in the lane and to stay in your lane you need to drive in the "rails." At least you can get traction easier because at low speeds the tires can remain in contact with the road surface.

These happen everywhere though, not only where road surface is worn because of traffic:

I dare you to veer off to that white stuff at 60Mph, it's like hitting 1ft of water or something :p

This is all because of that fucking Bitcoin meme, isn't it. So I guess I have to wait for cryptocurrencies to crash, or for Ajit Pai to ban them...
