    Wasn't that only the Mayans who said that? The only thing really special about the day was that it was the last day of the official Mayan Calendar.

    Yeah, but some people heavily misinterpreted it and speculated that it meant the Mayans somehow knew the world was going to end that day, which I find incredibly ridiculous.

    They probably got that idea thanks to the film that's based off said idea called 2012.

    Actually, the 'New Age' 2012 belief speculation originates back to 1975. You can read more about it on the wikipedia page:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon

    Yes, a lot of the doomsday predictions originated from that. In actuality, the Calendar itself didn't end like they believed. At least I don't think it did.

    It wasn't the origin of the speculation. It was a product of it.

    IMO it did have some pretty cool disaster scenes, and some of the actors were good. But yeah, I agree, it's pretty weak.

    I also forgot to mention I had a project from yesterday I just finished a few minutes ago. It was tedious to do, but I liked that it did end up pretty decent for my first project like this.

    ~Hard disks roasting on an open file~

    Anyhow, today I'm "shredding" one of my old hard drives for secure reuse. I have a three-step procedure for doing this, repeated as desired, based off of an old DoD standard.

    Code:
    #!/bin/bash

    # This script will destroy all the data on any hard disk. Not recommended for
    # use with SSD's, as due to technical differences, this may leave recoverable
    # data behind on the flash chips.

    # BE VERY CAREFUL! THIS TOOL RENDERS ANY DATA ON THE TARGET DRIVE PERMANENTLY
    # UNRECOVERABLE, EVEN WITH SOPHISTICATED TOOLS!

    # replace with the target drive
    drive=sdx

    # overwrite the drive with zeroes
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/${drive} bs=1M

    # overwrite again with ones
    tr '\0' '\377' < /dev/zero | dd bs=1M of=/dev/${drive}

    # overwrite once more with random data
    dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/${drive} bs=1M

    but instead it was just a tiny “yay”

    1. "Seems" wouldn't imply that it truly is correct.
    2. It's only one article, so how does it sound unreal?
    3. Well, you're literally looking at an article based off scientific research, so how is it unreal?
