I think auto kickdowns are sexy sounding.
    Just me.
But an auto in any sort of sports car should be illegal.
Old autos are fine. Don't mind them.

Work trucks are better with autos. Having a stick shift while hauling a bunch of wood in the back can result in some bad things if you stall for example. Also, you need to keep your eyes on the cargo and the road, so an auto is best for full attention to the road.

Ahh, Yes but no, If you have a very heavy load it's best to have control of your gears and use them to your advantage, Say you're driving up a very steep hill. You'd want to be in low range gears and work your way up, Can't do this with a automatic. It depends on your driving needs.

isn't that why automatics have low gears?

also most automatics these days have a "Manual" mode of some sort which would give you gear control

I know in my dad's truck, you can lock it in 1st or 2nd gear, normal drive, you can turn overdrive off, and you can put it in low range, if needed. Its great for towing the boat. Putting it in lower gears isn't a problem.

yes, those 1 and 2nd gear options are called "Low Gears" on an automatic transmission, they are specifically for towing up hills and in emergency cases going downhill (it's like an engine brake of sorts) AFAIK anyway

Ok, now try that on a lorry typically running 11-13 gears as norm and in many cases 18 gears. Just 1 or 2 doesnt cut it.

There was a manual available but it was a 3 speed as well so.... 0-60 drops 0.5 seconds. The manual weighs about 11lbs less.

However, big trucks are way less sensitive than small pickup trucks, since they're so heavy, so the manual isn't much of a problem, as long as you know how to drive.

what does a semi-truck have to do with pickup trucks?

anyway, my original thing was with full-size american suv's not being fun with a manual, i'm sorry but i just can't see it

    pickup truck, fine

semi-truck, why the hell do you have an auto in a semi-truck anyway? seriously that shouldn't be an option

    normal cars, manual or nothing

muscle/sports cars, IF YOU DON'T GET A MANUAL, you are a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PERSON

Some current Euro trucks have semi-autos. Not sure how they work, maybe like a sequential type of thing.

well IMHO a semi-truck should HAVE to be manual, even if it's one of the few vehicles where it wouldn't be fun

I think that it's mainly for driver comfort or something along those lines.
Maybe it works like Saab's sensonic clutchless manual, again, I have no idea.
