Re: General discussion chat He says he's only willing to spend 400 bucks. :| That won't get us far at all, especially if we're buying prebuilt. I bet I could push him up at at least 600. When we were in best buy he was pointing at like 300 dollar computers. The only decent ones worth looking at were at least 700 bucks, and they weren't even all that good. Like an i5 with integrated graphics. - - - Updated - - - I did band for 3 years and hated every second of it with all of my heart. Not going anywhere near an instrument for a long long time.
Re: General discussion chat Well, I got a refund for the shipping on my PSU since it took so long to arrive and I used that refund to order a peltier thermoelectric thing and a infrared thermometer. I just hope I can wire the peltier up to an old PSU.
Re: General discussion chat Intel dual core running at two ghz 4 gigs of ram I think I have no idea what my mobo is gpu is gt 610
Re: General discussion chat If he wants a 300-400$ computer, building one better than something in Best Buy will be hard unless you already have certain parts laying around and already have an OS.
Re: General discussion chat I'm guessing he can re-use things like the case, keyboard, screen, mouse, maybe PSU, HDDs/disk drives, etc. Plus you can get Windows for pretty cheap on /r/softwareswap. (I got 8.1 for 20 bucks when I upgraded my mobo/CPU.) EDIT: Also this:
Re: General discussion chat Oh ok, I see, yea If he has all that stuff already then building seems like the way to go.
Re: General discussion chat Have you tried showing him how much cheaper/better it would be to build it yourself?
Re: General discussion chat Not yet, but I've told him many times you can get much more bang for your buck. He agreed to let me see what I could do with the amount of money he wants to spend. He's starting to take to the idea of building better though.
Re: General discussion chat I am leaving on Sunday at 12PM, and basically I agree. Band camp is amazing, but it really depends on the director, and the people in the band. My band is small (around 20), but tbh we sound better and louder than some AAA bands. (not hating on other bands, but it is what we were told before). We are doing Beach Boys FYI this year. Here was last years show if you wanted it (I am the stud muffin playing the bongos; playing drums, vibes, and snare this year):
Re: General discussion chat I've got a rough idea of a build picked out on pcpartpicker. Not so sure that I'll end up buying from there, but I'm just kinda making an outline. CPU: i5-4570 Gpu: msi gtx 750 ti mobo: asrock h87m This is a particular part which I have no knowledge whatsoever to base my choice on. Recommendations for an okay-decent mobo under 100 bucks would be appreciated. Ram: 8 gig corsair (4x2) ddr3-1600. Would it be better to get one 8 stick instead of 2 4s? Psu: evga 500w Case: nzxt source 210 No os yet, I'll find one. There are a few things I didn't cover. It's at just over 600 bucks right now. Of course I have to pick out a hard drive and os. Gonna try and get os cheap. Build might end up approaching 700 bucks, though. I'm gonna keep it as low as I can without sacrificing to much performance. I already have a mouse, keyboard, and monitor here. Don't have to buy those. If you have any suggested parts or something that I could do better, please post them. I only have a bit of an idea as to what I'm doing here. I just remembered I'm gonna have to pick out some 120mm fans for the case.
Re: General discussion chat Toyota highlander. Parents bought it new shortly after I was born to haul the family around in. Was my moms until we bought a cx9 in 2010 and it was handed down to my dad. We both plan for me to buy it from him when I turn 16, and I'm sure he'll give me a good deal. I'm not so sure I really want it though. This has been the plan for a while and it's hard to just kinda change it. The highlander is a great car. Good on gas, reliable. It's the perfect size too. I'm just thinking about buying something worse on gas, less reliable, and not as practical. Like a p71 crown Vic lol. And the vanster: meh. Nothing to get to worked up about. You win some you lose some. Shame I missed out on sucha. Great deal though.
Re: General discussion chat Motherboard there isn't a huge amount to go wrong. Cheaper motherboards have a lower end chip set and might not provide as flexible over clocking options and they won't have as many USB or sata ports. But they won't bottleneck performance still. 2 sticks of 4 GB is better than 1 stick of 8, modern computers tend to be designed for dual channel RAM, ie they have 2 sticks. You can run single channel, slight ram bottleneck for no cost difference. 8gb is a good amount though. Perfect amount for gaming. With current games you wouldn't need more and its easy to swap it too. The case should include the bare minimum fans it needs to run. However your current case, fans and hard disk can probably be reused.
