There is no 980 Ti, also the 980 is just ~5-10% faster than the 780 Ti. No reason to upgrade, you could just OC your 780 Ti.

Only reason I could think is GK110 cards have pretty poor DX9 performance where GM204 do not.

Direct X 12 will probably perform far better on the new cards too.

Got my GTX970. Got a free copy of Far Cry 4 with it. Absolutely stunning game. Far Cry 4 runs perfectly, pins the GPU at 100% utilization and runs smoothly.
BeamNG drops down to 35fps in some areas on dry rock island and the card is just sat running at 40% utilization. Why do some games refuse to fully utilize the card despite the card staying under 50*c, The GPU didn't even need to turn the damn fans on due to the fact that it wasn't being utilized much.

I do know that was problem with GK110 also. I think it is actually a T3D issue and not on nvidia. I could be wrong.

I might be getting a GTX 970 next month! I can't wait to be able to play decent games at frame rates higher than 30 FPS.
Next thing I'll upgrade in my PC is my processor. The i3 probably isn't gonna bottleneck me in most games, but Beam will be a problem.

Just dont expect it to be super fast with every game you play. But i very highly recommend that you get Far Cry 4 as your free gift.

i wonder how much longer until the 960, if it's out in time(before christmas) i may end up getting that instead of a 760 SC

also curious as to it's expected performance levels (for example the 970 is more powerful than a stock 780 (not a TI) so i wonder if it will be more powerful than say, the 770)

You don't get free gifts with video cards in Brazil. :/
I just hope I'll be able to play games at high graphics setting over 30 FPS. Doesn't even need to be over 60.

I've had my 970 for about a week, I've been playing skyrim with a nice ENB, minecraft with SUES (awesome shader pack for the GLSL shaders mod) and Starmade (voxel space game).
It easily chews through everything I throw at it, and I'm only running it in a pci-e gen2, when it's a gen3 spec card.

To be honest, as great as it sounds, it could be better. I've had some issues with the drivers, if you aren't too techy, I'd wait for drivers to get better before diving into the 900-series.

I upgraded from a Gigabyte GTX560 Windforce to a GALAX GTX970, a rather large jump.

Batman arkham city runs at 93 fps average maxed out, (full physx, 8x AA, 1920x1080 resolution)
Minecraft with SUES runs at 45-100 fps, depending on chunk loading, visible blocks and weather.
Starmade flogs out 1500 fps on low settings, and 350-ish maxed out, without shadows. (shadows destroy all framerates) so about 150 with shadows.
Skyrim runs at 50-60 fps, with 'Maximum graphics RealVision ENB'
GTA IV runs at 50-60 fps (some low spikes to 20-30) with 'cryENB 2'

    Other PC specs:
    Processor - i5 - 3450 @ 3.2 ghz
    RAM - 8gb G.Skill ripjaws @ 1600 mhz
Primary storage - OCZ Agility III SSD
Motherboard - Gigabyte H61M-DS2 < The bad thing, I have a Maximus V Extreme on the way.
