Is studying the code of the BeamNG cars a good way to learn jbeam or is there a faster way? I've read the wiki and it helped, also studying the code on my own has proved the most effective but can be a slow process. (I hope to make a tutorial video once I understand the code fully) What I don't fully understand yet is support beams (how to place them) and hinge and latch beams. I did search and find I read a lot of good threads but I still need help. By studying the code I'll soon get it but I want it now Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What you do is allow me to perform a brain transplant between you and drowsysam (A++ on all 3 variations of brain surgery in surgeon simulator 2013). I think it does just come with study and practice. Hinge and latch I don't think are actual beam types btw, Hinges you would just do structurally. Lets say node B is on the car, node D is on the door. Nodes A and C would be the hinges. This structure as shown would be able to freely rotate along A and C. I think that is how you have to do things, simply share nodes/beams in a straight line that allows it to collapse. Latches I think are just a short breakable beam holding the other end of the door to the body.
Sign me up for the brain please! Thanks for the diagram will prove useful! So where this is a hinge there is always a latch no? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey I meant to get back to you sorry what did you find out so far? Do you know how to make hinges and such yet? Cool model by the way, I'll show you how to get it running in game, (a good shortcut) make some wheels and PM me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No worries everyone starts there. I know a few things but still learning myself, I see that your model is still standing and not falling flat, I can learn a thing or two from you ha! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Later on I'll show you an easier way to get it into the game, it's sort of a cheap shortcut but a good way to test the mesh in game. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's not perfected yet lol, I'll post a full tutorial once I get it down, I'm about 90% effective at it, I still have to learn how to connect the color files, I don't want everyone running around with greyish cars Tutorials on many things coming soon! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The thread is called "How to understand Jbeam". Meanwhile you guys are PM'ing the details... Sorry but makes no sense to me. Share how you do it and maybe someone else has a trick or two to make it work better/easier? Odd concept I know.
I look forward to seeing some tutorials, there are some good tutorials out there but many of them lack details. I've been trying to learn Jbeam as well but haven't had much luck making anything yet. Good luck, and agree with the post above, It would be helpful for some if you communicated on the thread instead of just through PM.
I'm opening the floodgates by request, I'll post the tutorial here and in a new thread. I hope we don't have a bunch if cars with no textures soon but by the naming convention that's revealed in this tutorial someone will figure out the color and texture system hopefully soon Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't think you're understanding this the right way. Hinges aren't something you define. They're just how you build a structure. You purposely allow your structure to collapse along a certain axis, making it function like a hinge. But in reality, it's just making something not rigid enough to be... well, rigid... Same with suspension. You don't say "hey game, this here is a lower A-arm" "okay, ill make it hinge then!"... You just allow it to be not-rigid in a certain direction, along a certain axis
