Depending on the car and configuration, driving a long time at excessive speeds can indeed overheat the engine. It all comes down to how the specific cooling system was designed.
Since our current transmission simulation is rather simple and limited, implementing thermals or wear is a bit of an issue. Certainly something that could be added at a later point. :)

So this means without the radiator your car will over heat faster, correct? Or will that not be simulated just yet?

Wow. This is a very significant step toward realism. Are you planning on having temperatures affecting other components of cars, such as the brakes?

Also, just curious: do you guys have any gameplay videos of the early CryEngine Beamng other than what you have uploaded to your Youtube channel?

    Absolutely, significantly faster even.

As said somewhere above, having thermal simulation for other components is certainly something we will look into at some point. For now it's "just" the engine, so no promises :)

Is there any way to remove the engine damage say if you want to create a crazy engine mod but you don't want your engine to overheat the instant you accelerate

I don't know, but there are probably workarounds that could be used to give the car extra cooling capacity/heat tolerance.

I think the beauty of this new system is that you would actually have to make sure that your cooling system was up to par with the power output of the motor. Powerful motors are not made to last, so if you want a ludicrously powerful motor, you'd have to make sure that you have a ludicrously over-designed cooling system. If you're making dragster levels of power (7000hp+), I doubt you would be able to tame it, but at those levels you're going to have bigger problems. I think the real trouble will come when/if they implement crank/rod/piston failure, or worse yet, trans/differential failure. There is a reason why drag cars are usually automatic.

More OT: How much abuse can a car take before it will die from overheating? Will it be about as much of a concern as fuel is currently, or will it be a much more immediate issue? Will power drop until total failure (like with ring wear and blown head gaskets), or will it just run fine until it suddenly doesn't? Can it smoke only from the exhaust, or could the radiator overflow steam up as well?

I think it will be soon-ish before it dies from over heating. I think that the temperature Gage on the dash will go up. When it's red it will die/or lose power. Then after its red hot and smoke is coming out. Then bang engine no more.

I hope after a crash the Radiator will leak and again over heat the car. A dev video will be epic. BUT best way to see is when the update is out. These guys are doing awesome. :)

Does/will removing the hood affect engine temperature in game?

Yea you can still deactivate this on a case by case basis in jbeam for everything that doesn't need/want/fit this kind of thermal simulation.
If you are just adding a much bigger turbo to an existing system it's obligatory to also improve your cooling system if you still want a stable car.

It's a much more immediate concern than fuel. Car radiators are pretty delicate things in real life, so damage can happen pretty easily when not paying attention. It all depends on what you do to your car, if you just have a small coolant leak and don't push your car you're fine. However, if the coolant is really low and you're still trashing it around Hirochi Raceway... Not the best idea ;)
Concerning visuals, it's more than just the exhaust. But hey, let's keep at least a little secret until the release :p

Unfortunately, this is not going to be implemented this time around. Aerodynamics/airflow is a pretty complicated topic and to get this right, we'd need a full blown simulation of airflow around/through the car.

Will I still be able to play with a keyboard? I'm afraid that since you can only go full throttle, it will overheat so quickly I won't be able to play the game anymore. It's the only thing I have and I don't feel like spending loads of money on a proper wheel.

Don't worry, it's nowhere near that sensitive. Most cars will be just fine under full throttle for quite a while, and won't come close to overheating in hard driving just because you're using a keyboard.

Thanks for the quick reply. Good to hear that I will still be able to play the game. Also, thanks for your hard work on all the vehicles, the ETK looks amazing ;)

I have got a question conserning the thermal system.
Will there be an exhaust temperature, which has an influence on the boost pressure in turbo charged engine?

Its already an extremely low price for what it is worth. I would buy this game for $50+

Are all engines more or less the same in the new thermal sim, or will the beater Covet overheat faster than the base model? Will adding a stage one turbo to a 200bx have the same thermal profile as adding the stage 1 turbo to the Sunburst? If we add a bigger turbo and don't improve the cooling enough, will we get pre-ignition/knocking, or will the car just overheat faster? will it be possible to twin-charge any time soon?

technically supercharging isnt in game, its just a reconfigured torque curve with more power. Its already possible to have an engine with increased torque + turbo, I have it in a mod.

Also don't forget the extreme durability of some cars in general. My Sunbird functioned as an air-cooled vehicle for quite some time during the summer after I got sick of topping up the coolant (I've since replaced the disintegrated radiator gasket that was causing the leak). The temperature would occasionally creep into an almost-concerning area when stationary, but it never overheated and never skipped a freaking beat.
