I think that at some point there was some guidelines in road planning where straight sections were supposed to be limited to certain length, but I'm not sure if I remember right or that if it ever was EU wide guide of road planning.

I think that in Sweden they put poles next to road to keep speeds down and drivers more alerted, different distance of road side objects affected feeling of speed as peripheral vision picked up those objects, so people actually slowed down when there were poles next to side of the road.

When overtaking some people increase speed while being overtaken, at least in some cases this is because of car next to them gives feeling of speed being all of sudden slower than just moment ago, without thinking they push accelerator to keep speed steady while in reality they increase a speed. Overtaker then gets angry thinking person is trying to block overtaking. Just some funny thing on roads.

Map maker can use that information when building map, to get more feeling of speed, placing something close to road edge like those poles they put in Sweden, will give feeling of speed, there are lot of visual tricks that really affect how we make decisions, those can be used to make roads safer or more interesting etc. It is probably future where we start to see that knowledge to be applied more to roads and other environment.

For example there has been studies that claim orange street light color increases vandalism, they have made tests where lights have been turned off or replaced with white color and it has reduced amount of vandalism, it would be interesting to see if in sim there would be more risk taking with orange than with white street lights, it is also only half off topic, since it might make beautiful road, quite lame, yeah :D

Best roads I've driven. Hard one :p
Grossglockner in Austria was cool, and a lot of roads in the direct area of it. Also some roads in the Rothaargebirge in Germany were fun, Ardennes, until you encounter a gravel road with dirt on it after rain behind a blind corner... (slidey slide)
In the Netherlands are very good highways, smooth asphalt and zzzZZZzz boring anyway. Just good, not beautiful unless you like polders, polders and more polders.
