Sad day for the rift :(

I am not too sure if we are going to provide support for this still.

question, if you don't, how hard would it to be to mod support for it back in once the consumer version is out (if somehow, somewhere, facebook didn't manage to ruin it)

I would be pissing myself with excitement if Valve had bought it.

But I want hell fire to rain down on the FB HQ right now.

    - - - Updated - - -

It wants to share it to facebook after you sign it. It also emailed me asking if I wanted to share it to facebook.

Of course, I don't have a facebook account... so at least I have that going for me.

That isn't going to happen, facebook own it. They are not going to let it go, it represents the possibility of huge profits for them. Our only hope is that someone else steps in with their own hardware.

Imagine if Asus decided to get in on this, they market both gpu hardware and monitors so they have a pretty good knowledge of this sort of thing. I understand that they don't make their own panels but that doesn't matter, i am sure samsung or sharp have something they can use. Asus have vast knowledge in reducing latency from computer monitors as well as their custom pcb gpu's. Their gear is usually of really good quality too. [/asus fanboyism] But honestly, they know how to put together good hardware and have a very solid track record of not disappointing.

I hope that something good comes out of this bad news, that thing is competition. As soon as decent competitors come on the market there is a possibility one of them may make what we want. Rather than relying on one company in the hope that they are omnibenevolent and do what the community wants. I just hope they agree to an open standard so all competitors can be used on the same games. This would hopefully push facebook mostly out of the running. Competition usually results in faster progress and lower prices, lets hope that occurs here :)

Just had another thought, razor will probably want to get in on this, they already have the motion controller. Its in their interest for vr to take off in a big way. Im not a fan of their hardware but i may become one if they do that.

Really wish there was a way I could get my donation back. Someone should sue oculus rift. Even though it was a donation they cheated their supporters.

Well to be honest when you back something on a crowd funding website you do so knowing that the people you are donating to could use your money to stab you in the back (metaphorically of course). That's just how it is, for better, for worse. You have probably enjoyed something awesome that has come from crowd funding, sadly this is one of the ones where some of the backers got screwed.

Sony seem to be doing well recently, last i heard oculus and sony were sharing knowledge with each other because they aren't competitors. Sony is creating morpheus for the ps4 exclusively and oculus is creating for pc.

To be fair I think the VR thing is going to go the same way of the wii mote. Bit of hype, some excitement when its out and now Nintendo is desperately trying to keep it relevant. Its novel and gimmicky and won't last so I predict facebook and Sony are going to be clawing at your heels trying to haphazardly force a clumsy gameplay feature of the thing into the odd sub-average FPS game about a year after the release of the first VR headset...

oh, and you'll be asked to share your progress with your friends who are secretly codeword for the NSA.

Im not quite sure i agree in full with what you said. For fps game i think it will probably suck. But, flight sims, racing games, space game etc would all be pretty awesome. The space one is seeming a bit over quoted but i think that is one area that could be very very cool. So i think vr may become like an xbox controller on pc, great for some games, wildly inaccurate and horrifyingly bad for others.

My experience with the oculus was with a first person tech demo and it did work really well. I didnt seem to suffer from the latency issue some people have cited (and is supposedly ironed out of kit 2) but did find the resolution of the displays to be absolutely abysmal, its not that they are bad, its just the fact that they are shoved right in your fecking face that you can clearly see each pixel. But it really was a damn immersive and rather natural feeling experience. Unfortunately facebook want to watch the world burn and as a result need to go shove something sharp and sandpaper up their asses.
