Pixelated terrain painter

    Hi! Does anyone know how can i smoothen the edges of materials that are painted on terrain? I created a new material, wanted to add dirt paths over the grass but it looks so low res and non aliased.

    You need to look into the base layer (overlay). It's a game changer.

    If you have a look on YouTube for terrymartinart, he has done some great videos on the textures and how they work. There are others too.

    Using a base layer just makes it so the base color of both materials is the same, so it blends better. But I have seen maps where the materials blend together even with different base colors. How is that done?

    The base is normally a picture of the whole map. So the colour isn't determined by the material, but by the location. Hard to explain. But it blends everything much better. You set all materials in a map to have the same base texture. Which is a kind of posterized version of the whole map. Then you use the rest of the texture images and settings to either add texture (normals, etc) or behaviour (metallic, etc).

    The key is overlay is the whole map and gives the main colour (especially from a distance). Then you ease macro in for mid range distances (mainly for reducing tiling issues with the repeat textures, by blending with the other textures), then you use detail for how it looks close up.

    Finding the right distances and percentages to blend these all together is a pain, but once you understand it all better it's ok.

    Simplest way is to copy an existing map and modify those images, trying to keep them similar in terms of saturation and level of detail, etc. also keeping the settings the same.

    Also I think DDS texture blend much better automatically, but they don't have lighting effects as good as the PBR textures.

    What youre seeing in those cases are maps that dont have PBR textures. Im not sure what it is internally that requires PBR to not be blendable, but if you use the older terrain paint texture style, you can blend textures almost seemlesly without a Base Overlay.

    Yeah, as above two posts... PBR is ok. It's just harder to work with and get right. It does look better if done well, but for the sake of getting a map out, it's easiest to either copy the terrain of an existing pbr map, or make your own using the DDS system.
