(Photo: BCPD, 09/07/2002) Location in question: The collision took place on this junction (see fig. 6). Between 1997 and 2001, 41 accidents happened at this junction, 36 of which minor sideswipes. Especially for beginning drivers or drivers new to the area, this junction may seem confusing, as the right lane is a turn-lane onto J.F.K.-street. Investigators believe this exact confusion happened. Belasco County DOT have installed markings on this lane, but to no apparent help. Crash itself: Both vehicles were travelling at a speed between 25 and 30 mph, which is good (speed limit 30 mph). Vehicle 1 was driving on the left lane, vehicle 2 on the right lane. It is reported vehicle 2 tried to merge into the left lane upon seeing the lane will abruptly end, and sideswiped vehicle 1. Immediate aftermath: (Fig. 7) Photograph taken of vehicle 2 fleeing the scene. (Photo: J. T. Fernandez, 09/07/2002) (Fig. 8) SMASH Auto Repairs, the location vehicle 2 was recovered. The shop has since closed down. (Photo: BCPD, 09/09/2002) Reported by both mister Fernandez and a witness (miss Y. P. (Yvonne) Johnson), after the initial contact, mister Smith stepped out of his vehicle, sweared at mister Fernandez, and threatened to pick up his baseball bat. He then fled the scene (fig, 7). One day after, a police officer spotted the vehicle at a car repair shop (fig. 8). The owner of the repair shop, mister P. W. (Patrick) Thomas, is a good friend of mister Smith, and offered to repair the damaged vehicle for free. He has been arrested, and is awaiting trial, and the repair shop has since been closed by force by the BCPD, due to other reasons. Mister Smith has also been arrested, and is currently awaiting trial. For the time being, the Soliad has been confiscated. Probable cause: The sideswipe between two vehicle, due to poorly indicated traffic situation. The BCPD reccomends: Either: Redesign the entire crossing between the Harbourstreet and the J.F.K.-street, where the situation is more clear. Reimprove the warning signs (e.g. traffic signs), so the situation becomes more clear
"Hell in the Headlights" Case: Drunk Driving leads to a fatal head on collision, August 25th, 2014 Description: After picking up his daughter from a friend's house, Eric Willcox, a 38 year old nurse, decided to cut through the San Amaro tunnels in order to get home a little bit quicker. Unknown to him or his sleeping 8 year old daughter, Sarah Willcox, this would be the last ride they'd ever have together. Coming in from another tunnel entrance, Jake Matthews, a 29 year old accountant, was drunk behind the wheel of his SUV with his foot firmly planted on the gas pedal. As Jake's SUV rounded a bend, Eric noticed at the last second that the SUV had drifted into his lane. With no time to react, Eric merely glanced at his sleeping daughter before the two cars collided. Injuries: Eric was killed instantly when the steering column crushed his rib-cage, his broken ribs puncturing his heart. Sarah miraculously made it out alive, though she was in critical condition for over 36 hours. Jake made it out of the collision heavily shaken, but physically ok. Vehicles involved: 1990 Gavril D15 V8 Extended Cab, 1998 Gavril Roamer V8 XT Location: West Coast, USA. Aftermath: After the collision, Jake stumbled out of his mangled SUV and over to the truck, and once he noticed Eric's body, he collapsed to his knees and stayed their until the police and paramedic arrived. Sarah was taken out of the truck by a good samaritan before Eric's truck went up in flames. Emergency response teams arrived soon after the fire started, quickly putting it out before it reached Eric's body. After bringing Sarah and Jake to the hospital, Jake was put under arrest for DUI and Manslaughter. After recovering, Sarah went home with her mother, Elise Willcox. Jake somehow made bail, and he was later found dead in his living room by the police the day he was suppose to go back to court, a single gunshot in his head, and a loaded revolver in his hand. He left a note saying that he couldn't live with the guilt of taking someone else's life, and that he only wished that he was the one to die in the crash instead of Eric. Photos:
