2 non-fatal crashes in red ETK I Series from the same winter back in the 90s. Crash 1: Mike, a 25 year old man, and Cliff, his 27 year old passenger, were testing out Mike's 1990 ETK TTSport when he ran off the road and clipped a tree with his right rear quarter panel at 105 mph. The vehicle, its right side severely damaged, skidded into a tree at 45 mph, hitting with the front right corner. Mike was seriously injured, but his injuries were not life threatening and he was discharged from the hospital 5 days later. Cliff sustained life-threatening injury to his head, was comatose for 19 days (finally awakening on Dec. 23), and it took him over a year to fully recover. The crash happened on December 4, 1994. Crash 2: Thomas, a 33 year old man, and his friend Kristen, a 19 year old woman, lost control on black ice and slammed rearward into two trees at over 70 mph. The impact destroyed the entire occupant compartment except for the driver's seat area. Thomas and Kristen sustained severe injuries to his neck and back, but both made a full recovery. The crash happened on January 10, 1995. All four people were wearing their seat belts. Had they not been buckled up, both would have died. The death rate inexplicably dropped between 1993-1994 and 1994-1995 at Frozen Lake. Between October 1, 1993 and September 30, 1994, there were 25 severe crashes at Frozen Lake, resulting in 9 fatalities, for a death rate of 36%. Between October 1, 1994 and September 30, 1995, there were 28 severe crashes at Frozen Lake, resulting in 1 fatality, for a death rate of 4%. The crashes in each year were roughly as severe as one another. The rate of serious injury OR death per severe crash was roughly unchanged, however the balance seemed to tip toward serious injury. No new medical centers, etc were opened that would have caused the death rate to drop in 1994-1995.

Crash location: Interstate 1077, mile 31 Date: April 28, 1994 at 9:18 am Description: Nina, age 58, lost control of her 1992 Ibishu Pessima at about 80 mph and crossed the center line, where she slammed head-on into a 1993 Gavril van traveling at about 77 mph driven by Don Dwyer, 43. The van had 14 high school students from a local church youth group in it. Only the driver and one student (in the right 3rd row seat) were wearing their seat belts properly. Two other students were wearing the belts improperly, and 11 were unbelted. The front end of the van was crushed inward about two feet, but the occupant compartment was largely intact. Inside, most of the seats had been dislodged by flying students. The interior of the van was a mess. All but one student (the one properly belted) were seriously injured. The driver was seriously injured as well. The student in the front passenger seat, who had been unbelted, was ejected from the van. He and two students who had been in the fourth row had life threatening injuries. Considering the violent nature of the crash (157 mph closing speed) the fact that none of the students died was called a "miracle". Nina was pinned in her car. Despite having been properly seat belted, her head was literally touching the windshield. It took 76 minutes (9:29 am to 10:45 am) to extract her from the car. To the amazement of the firefighters, she was still living. She died of her injuries at 3:25 pm that day, about 6 hours after the crash. All 15 occupants in the van, the driver and all 14 students, ultimately survived the crash and made full recovery from their injuries by the start of the next school year (August 22, 1994). Today, the driver is 65 and the students are 37 to 40 years old.

Crash Description: July 6th, 1974: While performing a routine traffic stop on a yellow and black 1971 Barstow, Utah State Highway Patrol officer Eric Kristofferson had called dispatch to check on the Barstow's license plate, which read "GONEIN60". After discovering the vehicle was stolen, Eric started to approach the driver's side door, to tell the driver, an unidentified male presumably in his 50's, that the vehicle had been stolen. After the driver floored it and drove off, Eric gave chase. After a short pursuit at speeds over 80 miles per hour, the Barstow crashed into the concrete divider on a bridge, launching off of the road and landing upside down, on it's roof. Officer Kristofferson would later describe the scene as "Horrific". The driver of the Barstow was killed instantly when the vehicle landed upside down. When the contrary was revealed, the case was thrown out of the Utah Supreme Court. As for Officer Kristofferson, he would suffer from PTSD for the rest of his life after seeing the Barstow driver's remains. He retired from Law Enforcement in late May 1975. In 1996, he would be found dead in his Salt Lake City apartment, from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the temple. Eric Kristofferson's death was ruled a PTSD-caused suicide. Image(s)
