Co developer here, the reason for the low ride height is because the running gear aren't finalized. Suspension is modified off of the Miramar to give more travel but slightly tweaked especially in the front to allow for halfshafts to pass into the axle hubs. I was not happy with the height either and after hearing of the complaints, I did some changes to allow for way more travel and a higher average ride height. Another reason of why I (we) didn't want to make all custom suspension is to keep cross compatibility with the Mir. Currently, the entire raised Baikal running gear can be transplanted into the Mir to make a cool albeit a little unorthodox lifted sedan. While this (the all new suspension) is of course possible, it's not really in the scope of this mod I'd say the low rear arch is an aesthetic of this car separating it from being a real Niva copy. It is obviously inspired by it, but I think keeping some of the originating character gives said character to the new vehicle. The latter is what me and Ryan have agreed on
I wouldn't say slammed, but definitely a couple inches too low. Still looks like a very promising mod, and there may always be the option to swap in lifted springs if the stock ride height is too low. --- Post updated --- With this in mind, a rally or maybe even Baja version of the Mir with Baikal suspension would be neat.
Not as unorthodox as you may think This is the GAZ M72. GAZ M20 road car chassis with running gear from a GAZ-69 army 4x4 utility vehicle, which was basically a Soviet Jeep. So there is precedence for Russians making 4x4 versions of road cars. I also like to say this version of the Baikal looks great.
Limited examples of vehicles like this means it is quite unorthodox I should note I'm not well informed in regards to soviet vehicles at all, I just like this particular project and have a part in it using my limited knowledge.
fair enough about Soviet cars. How about American AMC Eagle German VW Golf Syncro Country Italian Fiat Panda 4x4 So yes it is a bit unorthodox. But everybody keeps trying to make something similar.
I know all of those vehicles exist. I'm not trying to say they don't exist. I'm saying that compared to the amount of other vehicles both by how many models there are and also by how many are sold, they are quite rare.
I agree. I hope trying to code/model the Baikal suspension to be interchangeable with Mir will not be too taxing. If it is skipping that feature will not detract from the mod. So I like to wish you and your co-developer the best of luck and hope the car you make will be something you will be happy with. I have a Fait One in my pfp so I am in no position to judge
The Baikal was created with this in mind so it wasn't very difficult to do that. Think of how the D series and the Roamer have shared suspension and engine parts. You can also get the regular Mir suspension in the Baikal, along with all of the engine options and probably more stuff down the line
since we are showing factory lifted passenger cars i present the gaz 24-95 --- Post updated --- what is the hirochi trion
You know, since I've known about the Niva I've always been sort of puzzled about what exactly it is. Is it an SUV? It it just a weird 4x4 hatchback? Or is it like one of the first modern crossovers? Anyways, it's badass.
I think it could be called a cross-over. On one hand, it has an unibody chassis (shared with 2107 iirc), but on the other it has a proper 4x4 drivetrain, with a range selector and whatnot.
It's an offroader. Trying to apply crossover or SUV, monikers will end up calling Jeep Cherokee a station wagon. Which it is but still an offroader primarily. More of a Range Rover or a Jeep Wagoneer.
No real plans of 4 door for now but other body styles such as pickup and chassis-cab may be coming. The Bronto is also a very new model (even if the car itself is old) and it's not in our scope to make the Baikal live on for as long as the real Niva did, or have similar factory editions, so the production of our car will likely end in 2014 with a plastic looking facelift being made few years prior
