OT: It was stated that it was a vehicle, not specifically a car. It's most likely a car, but I found that interesting

From what I’ve seen, each car added has tested, or added a new feature. For example, the Sunburst tested ESC, and the Wentwerd tested lowering and raising suspension. I wonder what the Beetle type car would test? What is significant about the beetle?

Swing-axle suspension and an air-cooled engine.

That looks more like a rubber trunk seal, which has been in existence almost as long as the automobile itself:

Not to mention no remotely modern car would have a carburetor and a distributor...

In developed countries, carburetors and distributors fell out of use only by late 90s, which wasn't a long ago.

Yes, in standard cars, there wasn't anyone building new rear engined cars like that in the late 90s. Anything that was still built at that point were long time productions like the beetle dating back 50+ years.

I would love for it to be something like a Fiat 500... that would just be a ton of fun.

But there's way too much proof it's not Italian, nor did the car developer (Falkrum) ever say it was anyway Italian, or associated with the map.

From what we saw, the car looks nothing like a Beetle either (integrated wheel arches, full-width trunk). People are assuming it's a Beetle only because of the engine.

What if it's actually a VW T1-inspired van?

Problem is that it seems more rounded than the T1, and the pre-mentioned taillight on the very right proves it isn't a T1 either.

I don't think that's it due to how the engine bay is sloped it seams like the the pillars would follow that mostly.

I don't expect a vehicle in game to be an exact copy of a real vehicle. They never did it before, even when some influence in the mix was more evident than others.
Exactly. Rear overhang seems relatively small, unlike the Beetle. That's why I think it's premature to dismiss similarities with other cars and concepts just because of the peculiar engine design hinting at the Beetle.

Still, the way the engine bay in the T1 is shaped looks completely different from what I see in the image.

The way the engine bay is shaped looks a lot like that of the FIAT 600, for example. See above, engine itself isn't enough to make it a Beetle.

The in-game vehicle seems a bit too curved, and doesn't have the rubber seal, nor is the engine anyway a match.

    Counter-example:

Other than the unmistakable engine design, the vehicle in game looks nothing like this.
