You know what, I've been thinking we've been thinking about ETK's history wrong. Most of us have thought of them as being an analogy to MB and BMW, with some Audi thrown in at the modern end. But I think that's wrong- ETK seems very Audi-like to me. Let's look at the I-series TTsport- 2.4L Turbo engine, as opposed to the M5s N/A 3.5/3.8L sixes and AMGs V8s, but a lot like the Audi Turbo I5s Makes ~50 less horsepower than E28 and over 100hp less than E34 Makes a tad bit less power than even the non-AMG 3.0L 24v W124 engine, ~60HP less than 3.6L AMG 24v and is 80-120hp down on the non-AMG 32v 400E, 420E, and 500E, and (understandably) can't even touch the 6.0 AMG Makes anywhere from 5-40HP more than 10v I5 Turbo Audi 100, and makes ~20HP less than the 20v Turbo. Is available with AWD Seems to have a rally variant (the Audi 100 20v Turbo Quattro raced in rallying) the front is pure Audi Also, look at the nomeclature. The I-series and K-series have letters, but the 800-series has numbers. We know it isn't about bodystyle- the 800 isn't a crossover- its a car, just like the I-series. The 800 has to have a sedan to be competitive (Aren't there hidden 840-series badges somewhere?) variant, and the I-series would probably have a wagon. A popular theory is that special cars/flagships get letters and normal models get numbers. This makes sense, but why would the I-series get a letter? Wouldn't the I-series be numbered like the 800-series and something akin to a 7-series or S-class would get a letter? I think ETK didn't have something that big and the I-series was their flagship like Audi and Acura. To be copetitive they, like Audi with the V8 and A8, would have released an S-class sized car in the 90s or early 00s **cough** S-series **cough**. TL;DR ETK likely drifted from normal to premium, like BMW and Audi, but progrssed slower than BMW, like Audi.
I think ETK is more like the BMW of the BeamNG world and it's clear from the road manners of the ETK models. Balanced, immediate and light on their feet, the ETKs are diametrically opposed to what Audis feel like, which is heavy, cumbersome and, generally, sterilized. I mean, even the ETK engines are mounted in the classic FM (Front-Midship) layout, they're not nailed inside the radiator grille like in the case of Audis. Plus, the FM layout is even reflected in the classic styling and the typical RWD Sedan proportions of the three boxes of the I-Series. And if you think that ETK should have I5s, there's already a brand for this engine type: Cherrier. As for the horsepower, I don't think we can draw any conclusion for what brand the I-Series resembles the most because that's what the BeamNG cars are known for: mixing in various real-life characteristics with a bit of fiction thrown in for making the lore.
This would naturally change driving dynamics. Of course it's a mashup (the 800 clearly takes heavy inspiration from BMW), but I think people have just been assuming they were like BMW/Mercedes in the 70s, 80s, and 90s when they could have been a lot more like Audi.
I think the I-Series is clearly inspired by the E28 5-Series (heck, even its 467cm length is smack in between the 462cm of the E28 and the 472cm of the E34) with some Mercedes-Benz hints in the Aero-5 Wheels. For being inspired by Audi, the fundamental characteristics of the car should be changed: the engine to be mounted more towards the front, the dash-to-axle ratio to get smaller and the front overhang to get larger and, also, the car to be longitudinal FWD. We don't have a car with a longitudinal FWD layout and ETK has already formed its roles (making FM RWD, sporty and tech-filled luxury cars with a racing pedigree), so a new brand can fill in this niche.
Again, the styling is very Audi in the front and neither BMW nor Mercedes made extensive use of AWD or were succesful in rallying. I'm not saying that ETK is a direct analogue to Audi; all the points you made were true and ETK certainly takes a lot of inspiration from BMW and Mercedes, but I'm just saying that their lineup and market position were a lot like Audi.
Yeah, now you're saying it, it's true, BMW didn't use AWD back then but Mercedes introduced its 4Matic system in 1990 (while the I-Series was in production from 1985 to 1993), so there are some Audi and Mercedes traces mixed in ETKs BMW-style genes and marketing strategy. I wouldn't say the simple grille is a reference to Audi though, because it could just mean that ETK hadn't found a company face back then (but then it could not, because the Germans aren't like the Japanese in that respect, but then again, this may be an exception).
There was an AWD E34 (535iX), but neither it nor the W124 4matic were regular options, just special models with AWD. The styling apart from the front screams E28, but I'm sticking with the C3 being the inspiration for the front. --- Post updated --- Seaking of the I-series, here are some suggestions: Some badges that, you know, proclaim that it's an I-series carbueratted prefacelift-only SOHC 2400 model non-ttsport 2400ti and 2400tix SOHC 2.4L I6 SOHC and DOHC 2.0L I4 non-ttsport 2000ti and 2000tix wagon, coupe, and convertible LWB model Facelift-only 3.0L ttsport facelift-only V8 option this might be a bit too niche- XLWB facelift-only model with chrome grille and V8, possibly carried through next generation of I-series **cough** Audi V8 **cough** 1.9L I4, 2.8L and 3.2L I6, 3.5L V8 deisels (early ddsport turbodeisel?) also a bit niche- 2.0L I4 and 1.9L deisel JRI-made liscenced versions Knallhart badges and nomeclature (thinking of Knallhart as a tuning firm)
