Diesel bricks are basically nonexistent in the US. They stopped offering them with diesels in like '84 or something. There's the V6 but those are also really rare, so like 99% of the RWD bricks here have the B230F or B230FT. I see them for anything from $200 (Mine) to $2000-3000 for a good one.
As a Volvo fan i would not get a 740 as a first car. The rear end is very light and unpredictable in the winter (or in a emergency). If you have to get an old rwd Volvo i would suggest a _940_ estate, more weight over the rear axle and better suspension geometry making it a bit safer. Maybe a 850 estate? Very nice and comfortable to drive and with the 20 valve I5 engine it has more than enough power as a first car (about 170hp).
Price really depends on car's overall condition. I haven't seen a V6 variant ever, but I know they exist. Probably because in Finland you have to pay taxes depending by your car's engine displacement and emissions. That's why diesel Volvos are common in Finland.
Nope. All the insurers see is a 2.3L RWD car, which is not made any more, a heavy luxury car, with a first time driver. Also, there is a lot of car theft in my area.
I would say go for the Estate. You can have a family of 5 back there. Alsot it looks like a volvo should look like.
Wow that is really cheap! That's interesting that the gasoline engine is more expensive. It's usually the other way around here in the U.S. Then again we don't get many diesel model cars here other than Vokswagens
I would choose 1991 Chevrolet Caprice as my first car but if it's between two Volvo's I would choose 740 Estate (wagon) they are the most durable and reliable Volvo's.
I have seen better bump, this was not even 1 year. Might need to garage my 240 as prices are going up year by year already, if I would find motivation to restore it a bit there might be little money to be made. Wagon is useful, especially if looking first car and you won't have a girl to marry yet, wagon friends are needed to help with move to new place, getting appliances hauled around etc. which gives additional possibilities to find girls, also wagon is much better for road trips, again opportunities. Of course there are other reasons for wagon over sedan, but most can figure more obvious reasons themselves, hint: you don't need a tent with a Volvo wagon.
It depends, If you want a simple family car , I would go with the estate But If you just want a car with a bit more speed, then go with the Sedan
The speed difference between the wagon and sedan is negligible, it's more about space and style than anything IMO
The wagon is the better choice. Extra space and it's better in the snow because there is more weight over the rear axle with the wagon body. Btw the sedan is trash in the snow when I was first born my dad had that car and he said he couldn't take that car anywhere in the snow without putting cinderblocks in the trunk
