Looks nice, you might want to barrow someone else's smaller car for the maneuverability test to get your licence ;). 6K is quite a bit for a first car (unless your rich) so be thankful and drive safe :).

If you have 2 years until you can drive it, why not search for a better deal on something that isn't a shitbox?

I don't see why you're in a rush to all of a sudden buy something, because frankly it's a piece of shit in every way.

Wait, so despite conducting a poll asking everyone which car to get, you chose the one that was least frequently chosen, and the Ford model that was commonly known as the Exploder for its safety issues?

Next time you might not want to bother asking what people think.

the other cars are quite far away from myhome, 1 the montero is about 100 miles away,i dont think i would want to go that far
2 the volvo 240 i couldnt find it on autotrader, the closest one is 500 miles from here
and the suburban...well i didnt look for it though it would cost a LOT to fill up at petrol stations

It is probably the cheapest car overall for Arizona. Old Volvo parts and old Mitshu parts are not as common as they are in Europe.

    Suburbans are gas guzzlers.

A slightly dented, slightly abused, 1996 Toyota Corolla DX with the body panels missing. Wait, that's my car...

I strongly recommend avoiding any explorer built before the turn of the century. They were known for being terrible in every way possible.
You have 2 years to look it's pretty stupid to buy a car now. If you wait you'll have more money and will be able to make a better informed decision.
and 6k for an exploder is ridiculous.
look on craigslist. You can get better deals and you don't have to deal with dealers.

I didn't notice the price. That'd be good for one with like 60k on it. Not almost 100. Craigslist. Look there. I saw (and placed an offer on) a 2002 Grand Marquis there with 60,000 miles for $2750. It was sold before my message reached the seller.

If you want a 4x4 and you have 6k (for a first car I would recommend something more like 3k) to spend I would buy a pickup truck, Cheap, easy to work on, solid body on frame construction, cheap and abundant parts, gas mileage might not necessarily be great unless you get a small one, but that is what I would do. Also pickup trucks are highly customizeable if your into that kind of thing.

And for future reference: no suburban made after 1991 is worth owning.

If I didn't have a very nice highlander lined up for me as my first car, I'd probably buy something stupid like this, hoon around in it for a year or so, sell it, rinse repeat.

It's the V6. Don't waste your time with it. They go through heads like it's their job and the timing guides break a lot since their plastic. If you can find one, get the 5.0L Windsor V8. It's not fast, but it's damn reliable.

The V8 was never offered in the Sport. It's the SOHC like the 2004-2011 Mustangs had. I have an OHV version. More low-end torque and better sounding. My 97 has been nothing but reliable.

You may also want to look at Ranger's to sedanlover.

Yeah something about those 90s caprices makes me want to toss them around way to fast on curvy back roads.
Im afraid Id just end up losing money when I go to sell it cause I'd run it so hard lol
And the seats I know. They're probably really comfortable but they look so goofy.

Who goes with a SUV as a first car...maybe a pick-up if you have a job that requires it or live on a farm or something. But having a big SUV in the city just to drive to school is utterly pointless. Also terrible build quality...

Get something small, easy on fuel, cheap, and reliable. A lot of cars fit into that category, mainly Japanese sub-compacts and whatnot. Steer clear from European cars as parts are generally more expensive/scarce than those from American or Japanese manufacturers- unless you have the money for it, of course. Be aware that larger vehicles such as SUVs and long wheelbase pickups are more difficult to manoeuvre, and as such are much more difficult to park than a hatchback.
Also note that fuel prices are ever on the rise, though you Americans have it cheap; Australian prices for 95 octane unleaded are in excess of $5.50USD/gallon.

Good luck car hunting, and never restrict yourself to choosing between a handful of cars. Give yourself plenty of options, weigh the pros and cons of each, and get yourself an OBD2 dongle ($10.00-$800.00) to connect your PC or mobile device to the car (Most cars 1996-7 or newer are OBD2 compliant. Cars older than 1996 generally have a proprietary port, or none at all.) so you can check for faults before you buy.

If you get really lucky you could probable part it out and scrap the rest and get $800 for it.
