Regulary released updates. At least small ones.

After playing corkscrew mountain I thought of a multi player game mode I just wish was in this game. It would be typically played on point to point courses.

Eight player time trial challenge to the bottom. All cars begin the 20 minute game mode at the same time, however as cars wipe out and are destroyed, players are able to press restart and reset to the fixed start point at the top. The challenge is to get the shortest time to the bottom, all players best time is displayed on a counter on the right of the screen similar to what burnout paradise had.

Cars would eventually become scattered at various points and the player would have to dodge wreckage of others crashing down the hill. The course would hopefully be strewn with tire tracks that would build up along the course. (I mentioned this prev.) It would be mayhem. Once reaching the bottom you reset (Or drive back up to be devious and ruin someone's run), all players race for the fastest times until time is up.

I'm unsure if the damage could be handled server side, my fairly midrange computer would in no way manage to calculate eight cars. Perhaps damage could be limited to 50% detail or something.

Mate, you could just get basic info about collision like vehicle's name, velocity and vector then your pc would just calculate deformation of your car. It may not be accurate but at least it won't burn your CPU

Now you have a huge bandwidth bottleneck in your internet. I don't think server-side calculations are possible. To just have the server support 30 people each you need a dual CPU system that costs near $12k. :\

yes, because your neighborhood is the entire world

my internet is 25/5 (30/5.92 in real use), speedtest.net says i'm faster then 75% of the us, so that should give an idea on how slow most peoples internet is

you have a tiny point there ,BUT speedtest doesn't split into 2 categories: Casuals and Gamers. I bet that none gamer has a slow internet connection, so we basicly have faster internet connection than people who don't even play games(and probably haven't heard of BeamNG either)

You're fiber connection still isn't enough for updating the thousands of data reference points at 2000Hz

    - - - Updated - - -

And you're internet connection isn't dictated by whether or not you're a gamer...

Who knows :v I aint no engineer but all it takes to make a good multiplayer for BeamNG is a good IDEA for data transfer.

what 6677 is very true, i didn't even have a fast internet connection before the end of june in 2013, before that i had a horrible 5mb/s download and 0.68 upload

and if you take a look at the "Your Internet Speed" thread on this forum, you'll find that quite a few people have slow internet

and a good idea for data transfer isn't really going to help, because no matter what you need the speed to transfer 2000 points of a vehicle

Yeah, but instead of fast internet they have fast computers :( My setup(feel free to laugh as loud as you can):

    CPU:Intel i3 540
    RAM:4GB DDR3
Graphics card:Nvidia GeForce GT 520(it's a complete turd)
    HDD:1TB Seagate Barracuda

doesn't matter if they have fast computer's for online multiplayer (well, not as much as internet speeds) they need to have internet fast enough to handle the data all the car's info would need sent

There is zero correlation between whether you are a gamer or not and your internet speed, no correlation between internet speed and performance. Internet speeds are dictated geographically, not by whether or not I want a 200mb/s fiber connection. BeamNG calculates thousands of data points *per vehicle* 2000 times per second. This would require a very large amount of bandwidth with incredibly low latencies and current networking technology simply can't sustain that. Maybe a gigabit LAN connection will work, but anything else is probably going rapidly desychronise. The only solution I can think of at all is to only send updates for the reference nodes (or root of a vehicle) and calculate all physics for the rest of the skeleton on client side only. Deformations would likely desync for different clients, but if a full skeleton update was done maybe once a second instead of 2000 times per second then that could help rectify that. Would be alot of work though.

Now, how much were you betting for your "I bet that none gamer has a slow internet connection" statement, because you've lost that bet. I dont even hit 0.5mb/s down. It took me over a week to download fallout new vegas, in this time I did not shut down the PC or pause the download once (actually I was away for 5 days that week and came back to find it still downloading....)

Well, I'm a gamer, I have been for several years, and I have a 2/0.8 internet connection, not because I enjoy downloading at 190kb/s, but because that's all I can get where I live, and I'm 5 minutes away from Barcelona... Luckily for me, they are installing optical fiber in my area and it'll be available by this summer (200/200 connection :p)
