Nice man, i love my EVGA ACX 4gb 770 SC .. Thinking about stepping up to a 780ti soon. or just sli'ing my 770. I play alot of Far Cry 3 and i noticed that my card is dead even with a 290x
I have got a GTX 680 SC 2GB, to be honest when I bought it there was no 700 series and titan. There was the GTX 690 but I could not afford it I have never overclocked it since you decrease its lifespan when you do. I am pretty proud to have it and I do not regret a penny I spent on it.
Yep, 650TI Boost here, overclocked fairly high. (62.5mV overvolt) Says well under 70c. (Fan sounds like shit above 60% speed, but it never needs to go that fast)
Don't worry about the lifespan when overclocking, by the time it is an old piece of hardware and you replace it, it will still be fully functional, overclocked or not.
The card automatically overclocks itself until it reaches a max heat, that you can change, but is automatically set to 95. So, even if you put in a custom loop the card will still run at 95, just much faster. Like nvidia's GPU boost 2.0.
But you'll be able to run the same clocks at a much lower temp, 95ºC is insane and you're reducing its lifespan.
I remember back in 2012 I had a Geforce 7600GS. It was overclocked to the point that the speeds were almost double. It would normally get like 200F (93c) and one time I was getting low FPS so I opened up HWMonitor and thats when I found out it was running at 250F (121c) for an entire week. (Heatsink came partially out) Yeah, GPUs can generally handle up to 190F (87c) without any issues.
Nvidia have made claims that their cards are just fine running at 100*c in the past so i am not too surprised to see amd having cards running that hot from a practicality standpoint. It just doesn't make for great press
Probably wasn't 95, but I cant remember! I do agree that the stock cooler isn't that great, but the you said it isn't great because of the high temps, which isn't true, its high because its set to overclock till it reaches that point.( A lot more goes into it, but that is the basic idea) - - - Updated - - - The 250 - 280X, and maybe the 290 are rebranded old cards, but the 290x is new. The max temp is 95! Where the heck is the degree sign on a keyboard?
Slap an artic accelero on it when you get it. And while I see why you did it, aftermarket coolers are always better. Before I exchanged it (bad fan) for one without voltage control I had my 7770 at 1250/1500 @1.25vcore and 1.6(?)v memory. (Not sure) Always under 75c and never above 30% fan. It was silent. HIS iCooler. EDIT; Gaming loads, benchmarks would stick the fan @25% and over 90c, so I returned it.
Mass facepalm to you. You should have saved up and bought a Nvidia GTX 780, I am buying it even though I already have a 660. Some one tell me if I should upgrade.
The 290x is a much better deal than the 780, you crazy? The only things it is worse at is temps (needs aftermarket coolers) and the wattage. The performance is better than the 780 in 95% of games and it manages to equal Titan sometimes. The higher the resolution the more of a difference you will see. The only contestant to it right now is the possibility of the 780ti. Upgrade wise for you, if you play at 1080p, you only need maybe a 770, higher than 1080p and it might be worth it. All depends on what you call worth it.
Well, not entirely true. At stock clocks you are 100% correct, the 290x beats the 780. But if you overclock both you will find that the 780 is faster at 1080p and they are pretty much equal at 2.5k . I haven't seen any 4k tests but i can only assume the 290x would do better than the 780. The reason being is the 290x is pretty highly clocked at stock where the 780 has more headroom. But at that price difference i would have to agree, the 290x is a good deal, i really hope nvidia drops all their prices with the 780ti's arrival. For recommendations i would have to agree with a gtx770 for now. When g-sync comes out though anything that can get above 40fps will be really smooth anyway if the hype is to be believed, as long as you get a compatible monitor :/ Another recommendation would be a hd 7970 as they are going for really cheap at the moment and they are basically the same as the new cards as long as you don't mind missing out on the new fetures such as mantle.
Wait a few weeks/months and pick up a 780ti. Nvidia is going to lower prices on the 700 series cards to compete with AMD, and will likely have a card out that's faster then the 290x before too long.
once Hawaii matures I'm sure we will see higher clocks. I belive an overclocker got 1475 on LN2. But while I do think the 780 oc vs the current oc of the 290x is better on the 780; later it should be more in favor of amd. I haven't seen any benches but I imagine a 1200 290x would beat a 1300 780 @ anything over 1080p (like 1440p.) tl;dr the 290 should get mor headroom once we get better coolers so it doesn't throttle and a more mature process so it uses less wattage and doesn't hit the TDP. Also, the 7970 can use mantle, all gcn cards get it. It's only missing stuff like 3d sound and the other one. I don't even remember what it was, it must not be important.
The way I see it, G-sync makes no sense, why would you spend an extra 100€ on a compatible monitor to fix tearing (I've never suffered it) when you can use that cash to get a better gpu that can provide solid fps? And not to mention how many people will change they're monitors just for this feature... About the HD 7970 and mantle, it IS compatible with mantle, all the GCN HD 7000 series work with that, the 7970 included.
