Idk, I'm running a stock cooler on an amd athlon II 64x4 overclocked to 3.3ghz from 2.8ghz and I haven't broken 60 degrees Celsius with a stock cooler running prime95. Right now just browsing and watching videos I'm at 38 degrees and playing BeamNG I peak at about 50. I'm still probably going to get an aftermarket cooler, but this stock one keeps it fairly cool.

Mine too, although I just built it 3 weeks ago, needs a better cooler than stock, (prob a Hyper 212 Evo), and maybe more RAM. Oh, and I have to fix the cable blob behind the HDD bay, the idiot who built it (which I did not want him to), needs to learn how to run cables behind a motherboard.

AMD Athlon II X3 @3.4ghz, 4gb 1333MT/s RAM, EVGA GTX460, forgotten the power supply (its modular and I think 500W? but I cant remember the actual make and model) and the manufacturers of my hard disks (750gb 7200rpm and 80gb, that is a genuine 80gb hard disk not SSD and its also only 4200rpm). Thrown on an ASUS microATX motherboard for which model I have forgotten and I am not tearing the side panel of my case off to find, its AM3+ with no SATA3 or USB3 ports but does have a native parallel port and RS232 port (which I do use) and all wrapped up in a CiT shade case which was under £30 with a 500W power supply included (although I didnt trust it as it was entirely unmarked so that was replaced).

An old athlon 2 CPU on a motherboard without anything modern like USB3, pretty dated in this day and age. Plus the front panel ports on my case are physically damaged and the side panel is slightly distorted.
Looking to get a bitfenix prodigy, ASUS H87i-plus (may change, may not, I like the board but I think it only has 1 USB3 header whereas the prodigy has 2 USB3 ports so I'd rather not have to make an adaptor) and an intel 4670K. I'll be re-using the rest of my hardware for now.

I did consider the prodigy M which will take a micro-ATX board, but it looks far more cramped internally than the mini-ITX version and Socket 1150 mini-ITX motherboards cost very similar amounts to socket 1150 micro-ATX boards at the moment (actually, the website I usually use, although for this build won't be has its cheapest 1150 microATX at £70 and miniITX at £50). As I dont intend to run dual GPU or anything like that I won't be impeded by mini ITX.

I'll be getting an NVidia GTX860 or 870 when they eventually come out and I can afford them, until then sticking with the 460. Some point I'll have to upgrade that 4gb of RAM. When windows 9 one day comes out I'll buy that + an SSD. Incremental upgrades ftw \o/ Also thinking about water cooling in future, not 100% sure on that one yet as I have no watercooled before, its expensive and my rig gets moved regularly so not sure if added weight (if there is any?) will be an issue or if it is more likely to leak, research required.

    My laptop:

    Dell Latitude E6500
2.5GHz Core 2 Duo running 2.6GHz (Apparently these C2Ds have an extra .5 multiplier hidden in them.) and undervolted. (1v at max speed, .9v at 1.8GHz)
Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M 256MB with beastly overclock (Well over 200MHz increase on core and VRAM)
Modified heatsink (CPU runs 130-140F tops, GPU 150-160F with fan on low)
50GB SSD (I plan to put my 250GB HDD into the CD drive bay as soon as I get a caddy)
    4GB DDR2 RAM 666MHz with lowered timings
1280x800 15.4" screen. I had a 1920x1200 in it but I somehow broke it by tightening the hinge screws. I plan to buy another one sometime this year. For a while I had a 14" 1280x800 stuck in there with duct tape. It actually worked pretty well for about 6 months.
9 cell battery. Still holds enough charge for a few hours. I plan to get a 12 cell sometime.

I got it for free in 2012 from my dad's work with no screen or HDD. I just love it. (Especially the design, I just really like it for some reason.)

    Desktop:

    MSI A75A-G35
AMD A8-3850 2.9GHz @ 3.1GHz (Would do more, but it's locked down so no voltage or multiplier control.)
EVGA Nvidia GTX 650ti Supverclocked 2GB with a pretty decent overclock. (+150MHz on the core)
EVGA Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 320MB (Whenever I get cold I just start mining on it and my room heats up :D)
    8GB DDR3 1600MHz Kingston HyperX Blu RAM running 1.5v (Stock is 1.65v)
    500GB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda
Phantom NZXT 001-WT case (So pretty)
    Compaq S2022a 1600x900 20" LCD
    Hanns-G HL205 1600x900 19.5" LED
Crappy $1 tag sale Apple keyboard
Decent $15 Chinese Aula gaming mouse

I want to get a new keyboard, CPU, and a EVGA 750ti for it.

Just looked up the passmark scores for my current CPU's in laptop and desktop and the replacement for the desktop.
    3217U@1.8ghz in laptop: 2292
    Athlon II X3 460@3.4ghz in desktop: 2926
I5 4670K@3.4 as planned upgrade to desktop (with new mobo of course): 7804

I know that no 2 architectures are created equally for a multitude of reasons. But christ when you actually put those numbers on paper it really shows how sucky my old athlon is in this day.
Laptop is running 52% of the clock speed yet achieves 78% of the performance of my current desktop if you take passmark as gospel. Jaw dropping difference. Excited for the 4670 now.

Yeah, the Athlons didn't hold their value very long. They don't have enough cache.

To be fair the phenoms really aren't that much better. I have a Athlon II 64 x4 630 @3.3 GHz (OC from 2.8) that scores around 4000 (39xx) on passmark. I like to take passmark with a grain of salt though, as with every benchmark. All I know is that after playing BeamNg on some of the more complex maps, I'm considering a fx8320 or maybe a I5 4570 more and more. Getting 25-40 (tried low settings, but I didn't see a change. Running a radeon 7770 factory OC) fps on dry rock island is getting a little annoying. Disabling physics usually got me 10-15 fps, but maybe I also need to try a lower resolution to rule out the card.

Edit: dropped the resolution to 800x600 (from 1080p) and only gained about 4 fps in the spots where I was dropping to 25ish fps, so I'm going to guess that the CPU is the biggest bottleneck here.

Well, a CPU with 8 MB of cache ( the 965 I have ) will drastically perform better than one that only has 2 MB of cache. I know this first hand because I had a Phenom X3 and tried unlocking the fourth core with my mainboard. Although I couldn't unlock the 4th core, I was able to unlock 6 MB of L3 cache and it made that CPU perform a ton better than it would without it. Real world performance was boosted. Games would run 20 FPS faster.

Your CPU is certainly the bottleneck when paired with a Radeon 7770. I have no problem running the game at 40+ FPS in highly vegetated terrains ( everything on high except lighting @ 1366x768 with 16x AF and 4x AA ). A better CPU would probably squeeze some more outta my 7770, but I don't think it would make a huge difference.

Hate to break it to you but the video card is "too bad" as you put it, only benefit it has is dedicated VRAM and CUDA acceleration, otherwise the 610's are abysmal. 348 on passmark vs 457 for the intel HD4000 onboard graphics.
