Safe Mode

What is Safe Mode?

Safe Mode launches the game using a temporary empty User folder.

This means that your mods, settings, saved configs and other files will not be used for this session.

When you close the game in Safe Mode, your changes will not be saved.

When do I need to use Safe Mode?

You can use Safe Mode to check if the issue you’re experiencing is caused by your computer or the game itself.

For example, if the game doesn’t launch normally, but successfully launches in Safe Mode, it means that something might be broken in your user folder (mod, cache files etc.)

How do I launch the game in Safe Mode?

Safe Mode can be launched through the BeamNG.drive Launcher and is located in the Support Tools menu.

My issue doesn’t persist in Safe Mode. What now?

If the issue doesn’t persist in Safe Mode, this could be an indicator that something is broken in your user folder. For example, one of your mods could be incompatible with another mod, outdated, or broken.

To fix this try the following steps:

  • Open your User folder (Launcher → Manage User Folder → Open user folder)
  • Navigate one level up and find the folder with the latest version of the game
  • Create a backup of this folder by renaming it, for example, _backup
  • The game will create a new user folder
  • Check if the issue persists. If the problem stops after the above steps, start moving your files from the old user folder to the new one.
    • Try to move a few files and check if the issue returns - if no, continue.
    • If the issue returns, then something is broken in the moved files. Check them before proceeding.
    • For example: split mods into groups. Move one group, check if the issue persists - if yes, split them again. Keep going until you find the broken one
Move your files one folder at a time! If you do it all at once, you have no way of telling which, if any, file is causing the problem!

My issue persists in Safe Mode. What do I do?

If the issue persists in safe mode, there are a few possibilities for what might be causing it.

  • For game crashes, the problem might be with your hardware or software. Are your drivers up to date? Does your hardware meet the minimum specs?
  • If the game is behaving strangely, but not crashing, you might be encountering a bug! Check out the Known Issues page for more information.
