10 Fun Facts About the BMW M5 E60

1. Produced between 2004 to 2010 to humiliate Merc's and Audi's performance sedans, it was the world's first production sedan to use a V10 gasoline engine (S85 N/A 5.0-liter V10) that produced 507 hp.
2. The V10 engine and its unusual 7-speed paddle-shift SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) was supposed to resemble their Sauber-BMW Formula 1 car. Given the engine was unreliable and the gearbox had a lot of mechanical problems, it was quite accurate!
3. BMW did offer a normal 6-speed manual gearbox, but exclusively to the US - the country that gives the least crap to manual cars - . Therefore not surprisingly, only 1366 units had an optional manual gearbox (or as some sources claim the number is less than 1000).
4. E60 also had a sister, E61 which basically was a wagon (Touring) version of the E60 sedan. And those, remain the only sedan and station wagon BMW has ever made with a 10-cylinder engine.
5. The only other BMW with a 10-cylinder engine was the E63 coupe and E64 cabrio M6 that shared the same S85 V10 with this M5. It was the first BMW V10 and to this day, it remains the last one as well.
6. Despite slight reliability issues with the engine (which isn't as bad as rumored), the magical S85 engine has the title for the International Engine of the Year-Award (2005, 2006), the Best Performance Engine Award (2005, 2006, 2007), the Best new Engine Award (2005) and even more!
7. Because this car should have been focused on luxury as well as the performance, It was practical as well with a 520 L trunk space. Also one of the people behind making this car said "We wanted the car to be able to fit at least 2 bodies in trunk with ease!" and even though it has enough space for that, let's hope he was just kidding and not planning to!
8. The E60 was the first BMW 5-Series to get the x-Drive (BMW's own-developed advanced all-wheel drive system), however the M5 variant was only available with rear-wheel drive. In fact, the first M5 to ever receive x-Drive was the 2017 F90 M5 and before that, all M5s had RWD.
9. With an acceleration time of around 4 to 4 and a half seconds and a top speed of around 330 km/h (without the electronic limiter), E60 M5 took the title of the fastest production Sedan on the planet shortly after its launch.
10. If this wild factory car doesn't fulfil your dreams of power, G-power has also made an upgrade kit for this V10 BMW with a bi-kompressor (twin-supercharger) setup, pumping 820 hp in to the wheels, increasing the top speed to about 370 km/h and it has an astonishing 25-second 0-300 km/h time, just about an average Honda's quarter-mile drag time!
